摘要:
Test results of a study designed to analyse the effect of elevated temperatures on the compressive strength of concrete incorporating factors such as water-cement ratio, aggregate-cement ratio, time of exposures are presented. It was shown that water-cement ratio is not a sensitive factor, while the hours of exposure to heat and the concrete mix are.

摘要:
The fast rate of progress that has characterized the development of structural engineering in the last few decades has given a formidable impulse to the progress of the so called “space structures”. The various divisions and subdivisions of this area of knowledge has still not been clearly organized both in the educational area and in the professional practice of building design, leaving some sort of general confusion. Ambiguities in fact, extend not only to the individual systems which often overlap one another but extend also to the terminology as well. The present writing therefore aims at illustrating the overall spectrum of space structures describing the various applications as well as clarifying some of the concepts of that stand at the base of the various systems, covering generalises as well as specifics illustrated in the case studies.

摘要:
The paper presents a quantitative comparison of the relative solar exposure and thermal behaviour patterns of semi-cylindrical and flat roof surfaces under typical conditions in a hot-arid climatic zone, based en results obtained from mathematical and physical models. A review of sources on the subject is followed by a description of the experimental methods used to model solar and thermal effects on the various roof surfaces, and by an analysis of the results obtained from these models.

Change and the ability to cope with it has been increasingly recognised as one of the most crucial design problems in the contemporary architecture. The growing concern about the design for change evoked greater controversy during the 70's and the 80's, and became the focus of many studies on flexibility of building use over which continued discussion is needed. Therefore, the prime objective of this paper is to provide an in-depth investigation supported by some empirical evidence about the nature of the process of change in school buildings, endeavouring to highlight the main design parameters which regulate this process. Three central questions will be addressed accordingly: Why does change occur? How can it be achieved cost-effectively? To what extent may the accommodation of change improve the operational efficiency of school buildings in use? The paper will later examine different design strategies and approaches of schools, concentrating on a few design variables associated with close-fit and loose-fit design concepts and their consequences on the accommodation of change. These include uniformity versus variety of spatial organisation, articulation versus zoning of teaching areas, and independence of building elements. Meanwhile conflicting claims about their relevance to change will be reviewed and explained.
