摘要:
AbstractSingle odontogenic cysts are very well documented in the literature. Of those less common reports concerning multiple jaw cysts, many have been associated with systemic conditions or syndromes such as Gorlin‐Goltz or basal cell naevus syndrome, Hunter's syndrome and mucopolysaccharidosis, for example, Maroteaux‐Lamy syndrome. A case of multiple odontogenic keratocysts unassociated with any syndrome is reported so as to add to the growing number of such cases in the literature. The possibility of this case being a partial expression of the Gorlin‐Goltz syndrome is disc

摘要:
AbstractChanging concepts and a more complete understanding of the aetiology of chronic marginal periodontitis allow a more rational approach to the treatment of patients with periodontal diseases. A sequence of treatment steps of increasing complexity is presented for the prevention of recurrence of chronic marginal periodontitis during the maintenance phase of treatment.

摘要:
AbstractDenture soft lining materials are products which are applied to the fitting surfaces of dentures for the purpose of achieving a more equal distribution of load and reduction of local point pressures. These materials have provided a focus for research and controversy for over 100 years. In that time large numbers of products have been advanced as the ideal soft denture liner. This paper discusses the five main groups of materials that have been available to dentists: the natural rubbers, vinly co‐polymers, hydrophilic polymers and the silicone and acrylic based soft lining material

摘要:
AbstractThe transmandibular implant has been shown to be a successful clinical solution to prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with gross mandibular atrophy. Aspects of the biocompatibility of the implant material including the component metals in the alloy have been tested in an animal model utilizing sheep. The initial Adelaide results in the clinical multicentre trial are presented. These were generally excellent and the reasons for the few failures are presented.

摘要:
AbstractThe coefficient of thermal expansion of specimens from 60 freshly extracted human teeth were measured over the range 10–80°C using a dilatometer. The coefficient increased rapidly above 50°C, but there was no significant variation with tooth age between 10 and 70 years. The average values obtained were 16.96 (SD 3.83) × 10−6/°C for enamel, 10.59 (SD 2.38) × 10−6/°C for dentine, 11.90 (SD 4.42) × 10−6/°C for crowns and 9.44 (SD 0.61) × 1

摘要:
AbstractA survey of the attitudes of dentists in Victoria to various aspects of the treatment planning phase of removable partial denture prosthodontics was undertaken. Data were analysed and compared with those obtained from an identical study in South Australia. Those Victorian dentists who graduated in the 1960s, those who worked in multiple‐practitioner practices, or non‐rural areas, and those who had an added interest in removable prosthodontics were more likely to stress the importance of a greater number of attributes than those who graduated in the 1950s or 1970s, or those who worked alone, in rural areas, or had no particular interest in the discipline. Results indicated also that Victorian dentists tended to place greater emphasis on many of the concepts embraced by the questions asked than their interstate colleagues. It is suggested that, in addition to formal education, intraprofessional relationships and interest in a discipline are factors which might influence the concepts and attitudes of general practition

摘要:
AbstractIn current clinical practice, a differential diagnosis of severe localized periodontal lesions is rarely made; such lesions are considered to be manifestations of periodontitis caused by specific microbes from the commensal oral flora. However, deep seated lesions of the periodontium which are in communication with the alveolar crest, are well documented periodontal consequences of pulpal pathoses and can mimic the signs and symptoms of ‘periodontitis’. The very low incidence of tooth‐threatening periodontal disease in ancient and modern man is revealed when differential diagnoses are used in the examination of alveolar defects in anthropological materials and when epidemiological studies use more appropriate indices. However, no periodontal index to date has incorporated a differential diagnosis between gingival and pulpal causes of alveolar bone loss. The gingival and periodontal signs of severe localized periodontal lesions are reviewed and the imprecise nature of current clinical diagnostic tests (radiography, ‘pulp testing’, darkfield microscopy, bleeding on probing, periodontal probing) is discussed. None of these tests is able to detect disease activity and cannot be used to predict future patterns of disease behaviour. However, the commonly held belief that the tests are accurate has resulted in most severe periodontal lesions being falsely labelled as periodontitis. Failure to carry out differential diagnosis of severe periodontal lesions has resulted in the instigation of periodontal therapy for many lesions of non‐gingival origin. Whenever severe localized lesions of the periodontium are detected, the differential diagnosis between pulpal and periodontal origins should be made. The results of diagnostic tests in current use should be interpreted with extreme caution; clinicians are left to exercise their judgment based on consideration of all the availab

摘要:
AbstractThree commercial dentine bonding agents were used with composite resin to restore non‐undercut Class V abrasion lesions without enamel etching. Patients were reviewed at 3, 6 and 12 months and the integrity and marginal staining of restorations was assessed. The loss incidence of restorations ranged from 18 to 40 per cent at one year, and there was increasing evidence of marginal staining over the evaluation period.Comparisons are made with other commercial dentine bonding agents from previous studies in this serie

摘要:
AbstractA questionnaire was designed to canvass the opinions of dentists registered with the Dental Board and resident in the State of Victoria, with a view to assessing the present undergraduate curriculum in relation to clinical dental practice. All respondents were requested to provide information about age, sex, registration, type/location of practice and qualifications. The questionnaire sought opinions from all respondents regarding the priority to be given to basic sciences and medical sciences as well as the introduction of topics not presently included in the undergraduate course. Questions were also posed in relation to physical assessment of applicants for the dental course, the timing of introduction to clinical procedures and the desirability of an intern year (Section A). Other sections were designed to ascertain the current trends and busyness of general dental practice (Sections B and C) and of restricted/specialist practice (Sections C and E), the views of recent graduates and postgraduates with respect to the appropriateness of their training for clinical practice (Sections D and F, respectively) and, in a separate questionnaire, the perceived views of graduating students with respect to their training for registration as dentists. The results of the survey were prepared in the form of four papers, namely, General aspects (Part I), Recent graduates/‐graduating students (Part II), Current trends in general dental practice (Part III) and Specialist dental practice (Part IV).This paper deals with the results of Section A of the survey which, it is suggested, need to be considered in any review of the curriculu
