摘要:
AbstractComparisons of physical features within identical (monozygous) and non‐identical (dizygous) twin pairs have provided valuable insights into the relative contributions of genetic and environmental influences to observed variability. The special nature of the twinning process itself also provides an opportunity to learn more about early human development, including how body symmetry is determined. The mechanisms of twinning, mortality and morbidity in twins, determination of body symmetry including the phenomenon of mirror‐imaging, postnatal growth and development of twins, and zygosity determination are discussed.Twin studies with direct relevance to clinical dentistry are reviewed and illustrated by examples from an ongoing investigation of dentofacial morphology in South Australian tw

摘要:
AbstractHerpes zoster virus (HZV) infection, particularly of the trigeminal nerve, can be a disabling and disfiguring condition with variable clinical presentations. Acyclovir is a highly effective treatment modality during the acute clinical phase; however, pain control may be very difficult particularly with protracted and severe post herpetic neuralgia (PHN). The clinicopathologic features are reviewed and two cases in immunosuppressed patients with HZV infection of different divisions of the trigeminal nerve are presented.

摘要:
AbstractA randomized cross‐over study was carried out to determine whether midazolam in doses used for conscious sedation had any effect on the potency or duration of diflunisal, a non‐narcotic analgesic used for postoperative pain in oral surgery. Thirty‐two Hong Kong Chinese patients of either sex, aged between 16 and 28 years, were given either midazolam to supplement local anaesthesia or local anaesthesia alone at one visit and the alternative at the other visit, for surgical removal of bilateral symmetrically impacted third molars. Surgery was carried out on one side only at each visit. Diflunisal was given for postoperative pain relief. Midazolam had no effect on the potency or duration of action of diflunisal. Independent of the method, more patients had better pain relief following the second procedure than following the first, probably due to a degree of adaptation to the pain, at the second

摘要:
AbstractIn view of the continuing interest in the use of glass ionomer cements as a dentine substitute or base under composite resins, further investigations were carried out on the effects of the length of time of etching of the surface of the cement prior to the placement of the resin. A number of cements are available on the Australian market which are advocated for use in this technique. Each of them was subjected to etching for periods of 15, 30, 45, or 60 seconds and then stored in water for one week. Examination under a dissecting microscope and a scanning electron microscope revealed some variation in results between the different cements. It would appear that not all those materials presently marketed for this purpose are entirely suitable. Whilst 15 seconds is the preferred time for most cements, some require times up to 60 seconds to achieve the best result. Also, some of the cements showed signs of cracking, expansion and distortion after they had been stored in water for one week to allow for maturation before being prepared for viewing under the SEM. It is suggested that this group of cements is not suitable for the ‘sandwich’ techni

摘要:
AbstractThis clinical study utilized cut dentine surfaces on which the Creation Bond System® and Scotchbond® were applied after various surface treatments. It was observed under the scanning electron microscope that preparation with a tungsten carbide bur left a smear layer on the dentine. When this surface was pumiced, the smear layer remained and the tubules were plugged with smear debris. Polyacrylic acid and citric acid removed the smear layer from the dentine surface. When the Creation Bond System was applied to the surface treated with polyacrylic acid, hollow depressions were produced. Application of the Creation Bond System to the surface treated with citric acid resulted in some resin tag formation into the dentinal tubules as well as hollow depressions on the resin surface. The presence of these irregularities in the resin indicated fluid from the dentinal tubules prevented contact of the bonding resin with the dentine surface. This degree of contamination was not observed when Scotchbond was applied to a pumiced dentine surfac
