AbstractAll dentists registered in South Australia were surveyed in July 1993 in relation to removable prosthodontics. The replies indicated that removable prosthodontics constituted a significant part of most dental practices. Most dentists felt that removable prosthodontics should be an essential part of the undergraduate curriculum. They felt that more expertise is now required to manage the treatment of the ageing population with either their first or replacement removable prostheses. The majority of dentists felt that their own undergraduate training had equipped them well to manage removable prosthodontic treatment for their patients; however, many helpful suggestions were made on areas that they thought required more emphasis.

AbstractIn order to find out whether patient‐controlled sedation carried out only prior to surgery was sufficient for patients to undergo minor oral surgery, 30 patients of either sex between the ages of 16 and 30 years were selected. Each was scheduled to undergo bilateral third molar surgery, one side only at a visit. At the first visit each patient was randomly allocated to receive patient‐controlled sedation with midazolam either only prior to, or to the end of surgery. At the second visit they received the alternative method of sedation when the operation was carried out on the opposite side. With both techniques the majority of the patients were relaxed and provided good operating conditions with stable vital signs and without loss of consciousness. However, when given the opportunity to sedate themselves until the end of surgery, 70 percent obtained increments during surgery; four were assessed to have marked sedation and in five the button dropped off. AbstractThe principles of universal precautions are central to infection control. These principles form the basis of current guidelines for the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in dental practice. This study, which examined the patterns of use of PPE in general dental practice, was based on a postal survey of 260 dentists in Brisbane (41 per cent of the total private general practitioners in the region). Routine use of PPE was commonplace (gloves, 84.6 per cent; masks, 55.7 per cent; eyewear, 77.6 per cent), but complete compliance with current recommendations for glove handling and hand care had not been achieved. Potential problem areas in terms of attitudes to PPE were identified, as were inconsistencies in the use of PPE in both clinical and non‐clinical settings. AbstractPanoramic radiographs from 1026 patients were examined for the presence of completely impacted teeth. The prevalence of completely impacted teeth in the edentulous jaw was lower than that in the dentate jaw in both the upper and lower jaws. The prevalence of completely impacted third molars in the edentulous jaw was also lower than that in the dentate jaw. However, there was no difference in the prevalence of completely impacted canine teeth and completely impacted anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth (mesiodens) in the edentulous jaw. These findings may indicate that completely impacted canine teeth and impacted anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth (mesiodens) are not influenced by the loss of erupted teeth.

AbstractDuring the 1970s there was a resurgence of interest in disc displacement as being central to the pathology of internal derangement. Since then it has been proposed that a displaced disc can result in pain, mandibular dysfunction, degenerative joint disease and mandibular growth disturbances. Two decades later, and with the introduction of sophisticated investigations and treatment modalities, doubts have emerged as to true pathological significance of disc position. Evidence derived from clinical observations, autopsy material, imaging studies and surgical findings has failed to establish strong support for the central role of disc displacement in internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint.

AbstractA low power Ga‐As pulse laser was used to stimulate cultured human embryonic fibroblast cells. Energy fluencies varied from 0–1 J/cm2over a period of 1–4 days. Fibroblast procollagen production was monitored by the synthesis of [3H] hydroxy‐proline, and DNA replication was assessed by [3H] thymidine incorporation. Following laser treatment, controlled pepsin digestion measured the increase in cell biostimulation. Maximum increase in collagen production and cell biostimulation occurred after 4 episodes of laser treatment at 24‐hour intervals. AbstractThe present study was undertaken in order to determine the possible alterations in whole saliva and the periodontal status in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), and was conducted on 17 patients with DM and 17 systemically and periodontally healthy subjects. When the subjects were evaluated clinically, significantly increased probing depths were noticed in the DM group when compared with the healthy subjects. In whole saliva samples, sodium, potassium, total protein, amylase, thiocyanate, and secretory IgA levels were determined in both groups. Difference between the two groups regarding the mean salivary potassium levels were found to be statistically significant since the mean salivary potassium levels in the DM and the control groups were 2.470±9.04 mmol/L and 14.30±3.88 mmol/L, respectively. The mean salivary total protein, amylase and secretory IgA levels in the DM group were 2.41±1.0 mg/mL, 124.2±79.7 U/mL and 6.86±3.50 mg/L, all being significantly higher than the control group. However, no significant differences could be shown for the salivary sodium and thiocyanate levels. Nor was there any difference between non‐insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and insulin‐dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). The findings of the present study suggest that, besides the clinical examinations, the determination of the possible alterations in the composition of whole saliva might also be helpful in understanding the increased severity of periodontal disease in diabetic
