摘要:
AbstractDonovanosis (Granuloma inguinale) is an infectious disease, the effects of which are usually confined to the genital region. Various extragenital manifestations of the disease have been described. This report describes a case where the condition represented in the oral cavity some time after the apparently successful treatment of the genital lesion. Members of both the medical and dental profession serving the northern parts of Australia and adjacent tropical regions should be aware of the possibility of encountering this disease. Delay in its diagnosis may result in extensive tissue destruction and a potentially fatal outcome. Intensive antibiotic therapy followed by long‐term follow‐up is usually curat

摘要:
AbstractPatients with palatally impacted canines have an increased incidence of missing or anomalous lateral incisors adjacent to the impacted canines. Their arches are often uncrowded and this, in part, is linked to the increased incidence of missing or anomalous lateral incisors. Other teeth are also more frequently missing. The present guidelines for the relief of palatally impacted canines by extraction of the deciduous canine require that the patient is aged between 10–13 years and that normal space conditions are present. Two successful case reports are presented which were outside the recommended guidelines. The technique of relieving a palatal impaction by extraction of the deciduous canine has wide applicatio

摘要:
AbstractThe risk of contracting infectious diseases from patients with either serious or even fatal consequences has led to considerable changes in dental practice in the last few years. A key step in infection control is to prevent contact between the dentist's skin and the patient's blood and saliva by wearing gloves. The practice initially requires some patience and tolerance but then has few disadvantages. This paper reports a case where there were adverse effects to the patient from the dentist wearing gloves.

摘要:
AbstractThe effect of delayed seating of a crown onto a die was determined when using capsulated zinc phosphate and glass ionomer cements. The space between the crown and the die was varied up to 60 μm, and the commencement of seating was from 30 to 210 seconds after mixing ended. The zinc phosphate cement gave gradually increasing seating discrepancies with time, but providing 45 μm of space was present, the crown could be well seated up to 3 minutes after mixing. It is argued that this cement is particularly suitable for cementing burnishable inlays. The glass ionomer cement permitted reduced seating discrepancies compared with zinc phosphate cement when 45 μm of space was present, but gave poor results when the seating was delayed more than three minutes. The capsulated cements were clean and quick to use, and It is recommended that if there is a delay in seating, a new mix of cement shoud be prepared rather than attempting to complete cementation with an obviously setting ceme

摘要:
AbstractForty cervical abrasion lesions were restored with a self‐cure Type 2A glass ionomer cement. Prior to placement of the restorations, 20 lesions were scrubbed for 15 seconds with 25 per cent polyacrylic acid and 20 lesions were cleaned with a pumice and water slurry on a rubber cup. After three years, there was negligible marginal staining, and one restoration from each group was partly lost. There was no evidence to suggest that polyacrylic acid was preferred to pumice and water in the restoration of cervical abrasion lesions with glass ionomer cemen

摘要:
AbstractA simple screening procedure to determine evidence of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in a patient is presented. The current view is that dentists are responsible for the recognition and management of these disorders. The dentist should therefore perform a TMD screening examination on every patient and document the patient's functional status. If this is not known then it is impossible to discuss with the patient the possible implications of proposed dental treatment which could potentially worsen a pre‐existing TMD. Unless functional status is documented and informed consent obtained from the patient prior to proceeding with dental treatment, the dentist may be held liable should TMD problems develop during or after the treatmen

摘要:
AbstractMicrobial factors involved in the genesis of periodontitis include colonization, bacterial penetration of the epithelium, multiplication and invasive‐destructive capacity. Colonization of the gingival sulcus is related, to a certain extent, to supragingival plaque. Bacterial multiplication is induced by nutrients in the gingival fluid, and nutrients produced by degradative and excretory microbial activity. Invasion and destruction are mediated by exotoxins, structural elements of the bacteria, enzymes, metabolites, polyclonal lymphocyte activity, fibroblastic cytotoxicity, and leukocyte chemotactic inhibitio

摘要:
AbstractThis paper examines the perceived risk of occupationally contracting HIV among dental care providers. This examination is based upon responses to a mailed questionnaire from all registered dentists (76 per cent response rate, n = 550) and dental therapists (63 per cent response rate, n = 208) in Western Australia during 1992. Results indicate that: 1) dental care providers who perceive a high risk of occupationally contracting HIV report a more conservative, cautious approach to HIV infection than do providers who perceive less risk of contracting the virus; 2) dental therapists are more likely than dentists to report a higher degree of perceived risk of occupationally contracting HIV; and 3) dentists are more likely than dental therapists to perceive compliance with universal precaution guidelines in dental practices in which they work. Reasons are presented for a suspicion that both sets of perceptions may be exaggerated. The need to educate dental therapists on the realistic risks of occupationally contracting HIV and to educate dentists on the value of compliance (and of appearing to comply) with universal precaution guidelines in order to help reduce undue stress and hindrances in the provision of safe and effective dental care in this era of AIDS concludes this paper.

摘要:
AbstractViral hepatitis caused by the hepatitis B virus is a disease which has no oral manifestations but is of direct concern to dental health care workers due to its transmissibility by transfer of minute quantities of infected body fluids from patients with the condition. Many chronic carriers of HBV do not have signs and symptoms of hepatitis and are frequently unaware of the virus they harbour. In recent years immunization against HBV has become possible and a high success rate has been achieved in inducing immunity against HBV in dental health care workers who have completed an immunization programme. When the HBV vaccines were introduced to widespread clinical use in the 1980s it was optimistically predicted that immunity conferred by the vaccines would be for ten years. Recent research has cast severe doubts on this optimism and clinical trials have indicated that the immunity may be short‐lived and varies between individuals. Longevity of immunity is dependent upon antibody levels attained by the immunization programme. Post‐immunization antibody levels can be utilized as a guide to the longevity of the immunity and hence should serve as a prognostic indicator for timing of booster inoculati

摘要:
AbstractThe dental histories of 100 long‐term members of the Royal Australian Air Force were obtained from their dental records. Data relating to dental health status, as measured by the DMF indices and the T‐Health scores, were tested to determine if there were any correlations present between changes in dental health and certain risk factors which had been identified by previous studies in the General Dental Service in Scotland. These studies had demonstrated positive relationships between the frequency of dental examination and the frequency with which patients changed their dentist, with the amount of dental treatment the patients received. However, within the potential limitations imposed by the sample size, the present long‐term study did not detect any significant associations between the frequencies of dental examination or change of dentist, with changes in dental h
