摘要:
AbstractCervicofacial emphysema is an infrequently reported sequela to dental surgery. Most cases result from the accidental introduction of air into the soft tissues during the use of air‐driven, high‐speed handpieces or air/water syringes. Surgical procedures, in particular removal of lower third molars, predispose to the development of an emphysema. The clinical presentation is usually a facial or cervicofacial swelling coincident with the dental treatment. The use of air instruments, immediate onset, crepitus and often a radiographically discernible enlarged facial space are the diagnostic features. Pain is not usually a feature. The possibility of mediastinal involvement should be recognized and the patient monitored appropriately. Active treatment requirements are minimal. Reassurance of the patient, antibiotic prophylaxis and analgesics, if required, are generally sufficient. This paper reviews the above features and discusses means of prevention. Early recognition and appropriate management are emphasi

摘要:
AbstractA two‐stage topical treatment regime, AgF followed by SnF2, was used as a caries preventive measure in newly‐erupted first permanent molars in a group of children. Another group of children, from similar geographic and socio‐economic backgrounds was treated by a one stage topical application of SnF2only. The teeth treated were observed at six‐monthly intervals for a period of 18 months, and showed a significantly higher incidence of caries developing when treated with S

摘要:
AbstractA neurilemmoma presenting as a central bone tumour is uncommon with less than 40 cases having been reported in the jaws. A further case of intraosseous (central) neurilemmoma arising in the posterior mandible of a 55 year old Vietnamese woman is presented with discussion on the incidence, clinical presentation, radiographic appearance, histology and treatment of this benign neurogenic tumour.

摘要:
AbstractThere is little doubt that immunological mechanisms play an important role in chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. At the same time, it is recognized that patient susceptibility is ultimately responsible for the clinical manifestation of the disease. In this context, the present study was undertaken to examine a range of systemic immunological parameters in patients with adult periodontitis (AP), so as to test the hypothesis that a specific pattern would identify diseased — possibly ‘at risk’ — patients. These parameters included serum IgA, IgG, IgM, IgD, C3, transferrin, the presence of circulating immune complexes, and the number of circulating T (E‐rosette forming) cells. One hundred and forty AP patients and 70 healthy controls were examined. Following a complex statistical analysis only the levels of IgG, IgM and IgD were significantly increased in adult periodontitis (p<0.05) while an increase in circulatory immune complexes was significant only for separate statistical tests. Although statistically different, the levels seen in AP patients were still within the normal range hence the clinical significance of the findings is such that it is unlikely that these systemic immunological parametersper sedo define an ‘at risk

摘要:
AbstractThis study was undertaken to probe the efficacy of tricalcium phosphate ceramic (TCP) as an immediate root implant in the maintenance of alveolar bone. Three patients had five TCP root implants placed in fresh extraction sockets with soft tissue closure. The control and implant areas were evaluated at the 20th and 78th week on the basis of radiographic and clinical measurements. Tricalcium phosphate ceramic root implants in extraction sockets produced a significant increase in height and width of alveolar bone compared with control sites. It is believed that this method is a more effective and efficient procedure to preserve alveolar bone for the retention of dentures than other methods.

摘要:
AbstractThe sign of ‘clicking’ in the temporomandibular joint is not a normal phenomenon. It is, in fact, often the first indication of potential myofascial pain or temporomandibular joint pain dysfunction syndrome and as such should be detected early and diagnosed correctly. Clicking is a cardinal sign of altered function within the joint, the aetiology for which can only be diagnosed from a sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology. With this background it is possible to ascertain whether the cause is essentially biochemical, neuromuscular, or occlusal in nature or multifactorial components of all three categories. An attempt has been made to provide background knowledge in order that a correct diagnosis can be m

摘要:
AbstractBoth physiological and pathological forms of bone and tooth resorption are seen in the dentoalveolar complex, and much of the non‐restorative component of a clinician's work is occupied by problems related to loss of bone or dentine. Bone resorption is also a feature of many systemic diseases, some of which can affect the alveolar bone. The aim of this report is to summarize some recent work in which the dentoalveolar complex has been used as a model system to study physiological, pathological and therapeutic aspects of resorption of bone and dentin

摘要:
AbstractThe tensile bond strengths of three groups of adhesives to two electrolytically etched alloys were studied. It was found that the bis‐GMA composite resins gave statistically similar bond strengths. The newer Japanese acrylics tested gave statistically higher results than the bis‐GMA resins. The clinical significance of these results is discus

摘要:
AbstractThe success or failure of a soft lining in a denture is dependent not only upon the physical properties of the material employed, but also on an understanding of the intended function of this group of products, and the physiological and biological properties of the resilient oral tissues upon which the denture rests. This paper identifies the clinical factors that must be reviewed in order to assess the need for and likely success of a denture soft lining material.
