摘要:
AbstractThe aim of any prosthesis is to restore function and aesthetics by replacing the missing tooth with minimal risks to adjacent tissues. The options presently available to the patient for the replacement of a missing single tooth include the removable partial denture, partial and full coverage bridgework, resin‐bonded bridgework and the single‐tooth implant prosthesis. The relative merits and guidelines for successful application of these treatment modalities are presen

摘要:
AbstractIn order to justify the time and expense involved in complex restorative treatment there is an expectation of a favourable result and long‐term success. Longevity in fixed prosthodontics is not only dependent upon the precision and skill with which the work is carried out, but also to a large degree upon a proper assessment and diagnosis and the utilization and implementation of valid principles of design. This paper reviews the literature in an attempt to determine the incidence of failure and the reasons for, and types of, failures that occur. There is a consideration of some factors important in preoperative assessment and a detailed discussion of various aspects of design for fixed prosthodontic restoration

摘要:
AbstractA survey of 100 patients referred to a specialist endodontic practice was undertaken to determine the frequency of various factors associated with continuing pain after endodontic treatment had been commenced by the patient's general dental practitioner. Information was obtained by questioning the patient, examining the tooth, reviewing information supplied by the referring dentist and by observation during subsequent treatment. There were 23 different factors associated with continuing pain — all patients had more than one factor; most (78 per cent) had four, five or six factors; the highest was 9 factors (2 per cent). The most commonly occurring factors were: lack of use of rubber dam (87 per cent), unsatisfactory temporary restorations (80 per cent), and inappropriate use of intracanal medicaments (71 per cent). The other factors were related to diagnostic or treatment errors that could have been avoided in most cases. This survey suggests that dentists need to pay more attention to basic treatment recommendations in order to predictably relieve pain when carrying out emergency endodontic

摘要:
AbstractPaget's disease (osteitis deformans) and osteoporosis represent the commonest systemic bone disorders. Clinically Paget's disease may be mono‐, or polyostotic, and is characterized by excessive and disorganized formation and resorption of bone. It may affect any of the facial bones, most notably the skull and the jaws. A case is described in which the only symptomatic manifestation of Paget's disease was mandibular prognathism. The pathogenesis, aetiology, and management are discusse

摘要:
AbstractA case report of gigantic, previously misdiagnosed dentigerous cyst is presented. The cyst originated from an impacted upper right cuspid and its expansion involved the whole of the right maxillary sinus, the orbital floor and the lateral wall of the nose. The extent of the expansion was highlighted by the injection of contrast medium.

摘要:
AbstractA case of delayed differentiation and/or calcification, that is, development, followed by accelerated growth of the maxillary second premolars is presented. This condition was accompanied by the congenital absence of mandibular second premolars even though maxillary and mandibular third molar germs were present. The case was followed over a five‐year period. It seems that agenesis of any tooth might be found in conjunction with delay in development of any other tooth. Moreover, full development of a tooth germ (followed by an accelerated growth) as well as pathological changes may occur, despite an initial marked delay in tooth developmen

摘要:
AbstractNo survey of public knowledge and attitudes towards pit and fissure sealants has been carried out in Australia. This study assessed the knowledge and attitudes of parents of Melbourne school children attending five dental treatment centres, regarding sealants. Of 554 parents surveyed by questionnaire, 487 (88 per cent) provided codable responses which were analysed by the log‐likelihood ratio statistic and three‐way hierarchical log‐linear regression models. A total of 57.5 per cent respondents had heard of sealants; 46.4 per cent knew sealants prevent dental caries, and 45 per cent rated sealants important in caries prevention. Respondents attending private dentists or the Dental Therapy School were more knowledgeable about sealants than those attending other centres. Sealant awareness was related significantly to gender (p<0.05), country of origin (p<0.05), family income (p<0.05), and frequency of dental visits of children (p<0.001); the apparent association with country of origin, and annual family income, was explained by interactions between these variables and treatment centres. Dentists were the main source of dental health information including sealant awareness (p<0.001). The most significant factors in sealant awareness were previous discussion of caries prevention by respondents with dentists; dentists as the main source of dental health information; and frequency of dental visits by the child(ren). These three factors confirm the importance of dentist‐patient interactions in disseminating oral health info

摘要:
AbstractA group of 20 patients (12 females and 8 males) who underwent orthognathic surgery during the previous three years were surveyed. The reasons which determined the decision to undergo surgery are discussed. Patient satisfaction and the effect of surgery on psychological and social attitudes are explored.

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to measure and classify the radiopacity of various elastomeric impression materials available on the open market and to compare their appearance in radiographs of the oral tissues. In order to measure and classify their radiopacity, twenty‐eight specimens of various materials were placed and exposed on film together with an aluminium stepwedge. A dummy head was used to investigate the radiographic density of the above specimens in comparison with that of simulated oral tissue

摘要:
AbstractTwenty cervical abrasion lesions in five patients of mean age 58 years were restored with Tenure dentine bonding agent and Silux composite, without enamel etching. The cumulative loss rates of restorations were 5 per cent, 5 per cent, and 11 per cent after 1 year, 2 years and 3 years, respectively, and there was a slight increase of marginal staining. The results are in agreement with other authors.
