Duration of the rehabilitation period and familiarity with the prey affect the predatory behaviour of captive wild kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) |

A sample of 24 wild kestrels(Falco tinnunculus)was tested in captive conditions in order to study their predatory behaviour after a rehabilitation period from injuries. The birds, divided into two groups according to duration of captivity, were tested on three consecutive days with three types of prey: a live mouse, a dead mouse, and a chicken carcass. The results showed a significant interaction between groups and prey with regard to the movements on the perch after the prey's appearance and the exploratory flights above it. The dead mouse constantly elicited more movements in the kestrel, particularly in birds in captivity for less time. The duration between capture and ingestion of the prey in the live mouse tests was longer than in those with a dead prey. The live mouse was bill pecked several times, particularly on the head. Thus, kestrels still maintain a good predatory ability even after prolonged captivity, and they soon become used to the unnatural food provided. The implications from the adaptive and husbandry point of view are discussed.

Wild strains ofEuplotes euryhalinus, E. focardii,andE. nobilii,three Antarctic species originally described on morphological grounds, were analyzed for five enzyme systems (i.e., amylases, acid phosphatases, tetrazolium oxydases, malic dehydrogenases, and malic enzyme) of proven diagnostic value for the systematics ofEuplotesspecies. The electrophoretic patterns were all effective for discriminating strains of one species from those of another; in particular those of amylases, acid phospatases, and tetrazolium oxidases showed sharp inter‐species differences and no appreciable intra‐species variations. These results provided further evidence of the species status ofEuplotes euryhalinus, E. focardii,andE. nobilii.

摘要:
In the coral reef of Mayotte (Comores) two species ofTethyahave been found. One,T. peracuta(Topsent), lives densely in a restricted zone in the shallow waters of the lagoon. Its study in situ and in the laboratory has allowed a more complete description showing that this species is characterized by peculiar morphological and spicular characters and also by a special type of external budding. The other species found in the outer reef,T. comorensis,is new for science.

摘要:
A key is proposed for identifying the hairs of Italian Insectívora, Rodentia and Lagomorpha to the genera and species level using microscope analysis. The criteria used are: general morphology, scale cuticular pattern, cortex structure, medulla type, and shape in cross‐section. A new method of cross‐sectioning hair is illustrated.
