AbstractIn this article simple closed‐form are presented expressions to compute the diffraction loss of open resonators composed of spherical mirrors of circular cross‐section. These expressions, which are based on the numerical results of scalar theory, should be useful in designing mirror size for open resonators. AbstractThis article reports a new experimental design technique for GaAs FET frequency multipliers based on harmonic load‐pull measurements [1]. The choices of biasing point, input power level, and load impedances at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies are examined to optimize the conversion gain and the multiplier power efficiency. This technique was validated by designing a 2.5–7.5‐GHz frequency tripler, using the NE 71083 GaAs FET. The performance of the frequency tripler built in MIC technology was found comparable to the multiharmonic load‐pull results and simulation results. © 1992 John Wiley&S

AbstractWe have developed a computer‐efficient algorithm and the related CAD‐oriented software to calculate the transverse propagation delays in a GaAs/AlGaAs MODFET. AbstractA lumped capacitance equivalent circuit is used to characterize the asymmetric edge‐coupled microstrip discontinuity in the case in which the conducting strips are embedded in a multilayered anisotropic medium. The Galerkin method in the spectral domain is employed to determine the excess charge density on the strips of the discontinuity. AbstractSimulated and experimental data on mixer performance of semiconductor alloy ramp heterostructure diodes are presented. The results indicate that these devices are excellent candidates for use in microwave and millimeter‐wave mixer circuits. AbstractA new technique for exciting 2 × 2 subarray of linearly tapered slot antennas (LTSAs) with coplanar waveguide (CPW) is presented. rf power is coupled to each element through a CPW‐to‐slotline transition by a coax‐to‐CPW in‐phase four‐way radial power divider. The transition and the power divider are coupled by a novel nonplanar CPW right‐angle bend. Measured results at 18 GHz show excellent radiation patterns and return‐loss characteristics. © 1992 Joh

AbstractA technique for continuous operation of a dual‐mode tunable laser with a compound grating‐grating external cavity is presented. Double‐wavelength operation is obtained. The two modes of the laser can be independently tuned to achieve mode spacing frequencies from 130 to 370 GHz. Possible ways to increase this range are also discussed. This technique may be useful for millimeter‐wave generation by optical mixing. © 1992 John Wiley&S

AbstractThis design improves the authors' previous work by including losses in the nonlinear medium. Unlike other all‐optical switches, the nonlinear region for soliton interaction in this design is much shorter. This provides greater flexibility on the choices of nonlinear material as well as reduction of the threshold soliton power.
