AbstractThe problem of determining the precise slot boundaries is an essential one in optical‐fiber pulse position modulation (PPM) systems due to the temporal nature of the format. Here we present an original spectral characterization of the PPM process and establish the requirements to realize a discrete spectral slot rate component. In particular we show that this component is independent of the modulation index and data probability distribution. The dependence of the component on pulse shapes is investigated and examined for the important class of dispersed Gaussian‐type pulse shapes normally associated with optical‐fiber transmission. Original practical results, measured on a 128‐slot PPM system, are presented and shown to be in agreement with the theoretical predictions to within 1 dB. © 1993 John Wiley&S

AbstractHere we show that a Fresnel prism can be used as a polarization interferometer. A linearly polarized beam, which is incident in this interferometer, is split into two circularly polarized beams, one right and another left, which generate the interference pattern. Interposing a solution of common sugar in the incident beam, the former pattern is shifted because of the circular birefringence of the sugar. Measuring the displacement of the interference pattern, we determine the phase difference between both circular polarizations introduced by the solution. Moreover, we compare this result with that obtained by measuring the rotation power, concluding that they are in good agreement. © 1993 John Wiley&Sons, Inc

AbstractA modified two‐dimensional FD‐TD method is used for the analysis of an H‐plane waveguide loaded with a dielectric post of arbitrary shape, size, number, and location, and the dielectric post resonances and the application of measurement of permittivity constant are discussed. The numerical results are in good agreement with data available in the literature, and the versatility of this approach is given. © 1993 John Wiley&Son

摘要:
AbstractAn acousto‐optic modulator is made using an optical fiber placed on a ceramic piezoelectric transducer. The photodetected signals show frequency multiplication and phase shifting of the acoustic signals applied to the piezoelectric transducer depending on the lightwave beam incidence angle. The linear polarization of the lightwave is destroyed after passage through the fiber. The normalized lightwave transmission coefficient depends on the acoustic modulating signal frequency, and has values exceeding 1 at or near cross polarization. This is an anomalous phenomenon, letting one assume that pseudoamplification, or intensification, is occurring at the previously stated conditions. © 1993 John Wiley&Sons, I

AbstractThis Letter presents a novel type of integrated optical temperature sensor which is based on a single waveguide with a reflecting mirror at the rear end. The experimental results achieve a half‐wave temperature of 0.14 C and an extinction ratio of 76%. The reflecting mode sensor shows advantages over the Mach‐Zehnder structure in terms of high sensitivity and good extinction ratio. © 1993 John Wiley&Sons,
