AbstractMany of the haemopoietic cell growth factors have now been purified to homogeneity and their structural genes cloned. Methods are also now available for obtaining pure populations of haemopoietic cells. The use of such cells, in combination with pure growth factors, has provided intriguing information about the biological activities and mode of action of the factors in faciliating survival, proliferation and differentiation of the haemopoietic cells.

AbstractThe molecular aspects of the microtubule system is a research area that has developed very rapidly during the past decade. Research on the assembly mechanisms and chemistry of tubulin and the molecular biology of microtubules have advanced our understanding of microtubule formation and its regulation. The emerging view of tubulin is of a macromolecule containing spatially discrete sequences that constitute functionally different domains with respect to self‐association, interactions with microtubule associated proteins (MAPs) and specific ligands. Recent studies point to the role of the carboxyl‐terminal moiety of tubulin subunits in regulating its assembly into microtubules. AbstractThe last year has unveiled extensive information on the T‐cell antigen receptor genes. For both the α‐ and β‐chains of this molecule, it is clear that an expressed gene is compiled from several coding sequences dispersed along the chromosome. During T‐cell development, recombination events occur which create a single transcription unit from these dispersed elements. Such gene organization shows that the T‐cell receptor has close evolutionary links with immunoglobulins. AbstractThere is a tendency for living things to join up, establish linkage, live inside each other, return to earlier arrangements, get along, whenever possible. This is the way of the world.The new phenomenon of cell fusion, a laboratory trick on which much of today's science of molecular genetics relies for its data, is the simplest and most spectacular symbol of the tendency. In a way, it is the most unbiologic of all phenomena, violating the most fundamental myths of the last century, for it denies the importance of specificity, integrity, and separateness in living things. Any cell ‐ man, animal, fish, fowl, or insect ‐ given the chance and under the right conditions, brought into contact with any other cell, however foreign, will fuse with it. Cytoplasm will flow easily from one to the other, the nuclei will combine, and it will become, for a time anyway, a single cell with two complete, alien genomes, ready to dance, ready to multiply.
