AbstractThe stereotyped pattern of cell commitments during leech embryogenesis is described. The nature of cell commitments during segmentation differs significantly between leech and fruit fly. Despite the constancy of cell fate assignments in normal development, ablation experiments show that cell interactions are essential in setting some of these commitments. Interacting cells follow a positionally determined hierarchy of fate choices. For other cells, which appear to have fates fixed from birth, the possibility of determinative interactions between mother and daughter cells is discussed.

AbstractDNA replication initiates at many sites in eukaryotic chromosomes. It has been difficult to isolate such replication origins, but a family of sequences from the yeast genome have properties which suggest that they may serve this function. The identification of these sequences together with sophisticated methods of genetic analysis, make yeast a useful organism for the study of eukaryotic DNA replication.

AbstractCytoskeletal organization in embryonic skeletal muscle cells has been examined by transmission electron microscopy; the technique involves preparation using the platinum replication method of freezedried samples, with and without cryofracture. The cytoskeletons in developing muscle cells appear to play a role in preserving cell shape as well as in anchoring myofibrils to cell membrane.
