A cruterion was given in [M] for a module to have finite projective dimension over a pullback of local rings. The main purpose of this paper is to show an analogue holds for injective dimension.

The commutator map θα: G → G associated with the element α of the group G is defined by θα(g) = g−1α−1gα for all g ε G. In this paper we prove that if the image θαis a subgroup of the finite group G, then θα(G) is soluble. (This in fact generalises the well-known result which states that all finite groups that admit a fixed-point-free automorphism are soluble.) An application (that motivated this paper) to the theory of permutation groups is also given.

For the collection {Rα} of commutative rings with identity (α ε A), let. We define a map C fromRto a certain cross product and use C to construct a lattice L. We show that C is a homeomorphism from Maxspec(R) to the Stone space (space of ultrafilters) on L and find necessary and sufficient conditions for C to be a homeomorphism from Minspec(R) to the space of minimal prime filters on L. Finitely generated prime ideals are characterized and it is shown that C is a homeomorphism from Spec(R) to the space of prime filters on L if and only ifRhas finite Krull dimension. A special class of primes is considered in the general case and two more classes of primes are considered when each Rαis a Dedekind domain.

In this paper we characterize the (commutative) Priifer rings that can be realized as endomorphism rings of artinian modules over arbitrary associative rings with identity (Theorem 4.7). This characterization is obtained by determining the structure of ∑-pure-injective modules over Prufer rings (Theorems 3.4 and 3.5)
