摘要:

This paper is part of a program to study Alperin’s weight conjecture and Dade’s conjecture on counting characters in blocks for several finite groups. The local structures of radical subgroups and certain radical chains in the simple Mathieu groups are given, and the conjectures are confirmed for these groups.

LetDbe a division ring with centreFand denote byD′the derived group (commutator subgroup) ofD*= D − {0}. It is shown that if each element ofD′is algebraic overF, thenDis algebraic overF. It is also proved that each finite separable extension ofFinDis of the formF(c) for some elementcin the derived groupD′. Using these results, it is shown that if each element of the derived groupD′is of bounded degree overF, thenDis finite dimensional overF.

We analyze the corestriction corL/F(S) of a central simple algebraSoverLwith respect to a Dubrovin valuation ringA(resp.Bi) of corL/F(S) (resp.S) extendingVonF(resp.WionL) whereLis a finite separable extension ofFand theWiare the extensions ofVtoLfor 1 ≤i≤k. Under the suitable conditions, we show that for the value groupand for the center of residue ringwhereN(Z(Bi)/F) is the normal closure ofZ(Bi) overFandmiis an integer depending on which roots of unity lie inFandL.
