Letbe a finite abelian group, wherepi(1 ≤i≤r) are (not necessarily distinct) odd primes. Suppose. Using a result of Carlitz and Moser, we show that. Consequently, we prove that the rank of any Latin square associated with the groupGis at least. This sharpens a result in [2].

The object of the paper is to extend part of the theory of *-orderings on a skewfield with involution to a general ring with involution. The valuation associated to a *-ordering is examined. Every *-ordering is shown to extend. *-orderings are shown to form a space of signs as defined by Brocker and Marshall. In case the involution is the identity, the ring under consideration is commutative and the *-orderings are just the usual orderings making up the usual real spectrum of a commutative ring as defined by Coste and Roy.

LetA, Bbe associative rings with identity, and (S, ≤) a strictly totally ordered commutative monoid which is also artinian. For any bimoduleAMB, we construct a bimoduleA[[S]]M[S]B[[S]]and prove thatAMBdefines a quasi-duality if and only if the bimoduleA[[S]]M[S]B[[S]]defines a quasi-duality. As a corollary, it is shown that if a ringAhas a quasi-duality then the ringA[[S]] of generalized power series overAhas a quasi-duality.

The notion of a polynomial identity for algebras is well-known. In this work the notion of identity is transferred to coalgebras (where one may call it a coidentity). The author studies the basic properties of coidenti-ties, some examples of Hopf algebras with an identity or a coidentity are considered.
