In this paper,the identities of degree less than five that are satisfied by all mutations of associative algebras are determined. Among them, we find four mutually irreducible identities that imply all the others. We also study, for algebras that belong tothe variety generated by mutations of associative algebras, some problems which have been already considered for mutation algebras themselves.

Superalgebras J(F) of finite or infinite dimension obtained by the Kantor doubling process from dot-bracket superalgebras (F, ., x ) with a supercommutative, associative product . and a superbracket x are examined. Such a superalgebra is Jordan if and only if x is a Jordan superbracket and is simple if and only if (F, ., x) is simple. Superalgebras J(F) of vector typewhere D is a derivation of (F, .)) are special. Superalgebras J(F) for poisson brackets F on even and odd variables are exceptional except in the case of a single odd variable and no even variables.

Given any isomorphically closed class of simple modules over a ring R analogues of the Jacobson radical and socle are studied. A triangular decomposition theorem is proved (Theorem I), in the case when R is contains no infinite family of orthogonal idempotents, and this includes an analogue of a Theorem of Gordon. We also provide in Lemma 4 a description of this socle in a triangular matrix ring when the class is the class of all simple projective modules. Finally, a structure theorem IS proved for the rings R, with no infinite family of orthogonal idempotents, in which gRg has a projective simple module for all idempotents g withgR(l-g) = 0.

An important tool in the study of a finite dimensional Jordan algebra J is the generic norm N of J. N can be introduced as the exact denominator for the inversion map [B&K, p.761. The norm is of interest because it tests invertibility and it is a semi-invariant for both the structure Lie algebra and the structure group of J.

Let R be a commutative ring with identity. If an ideal I of R can be generated by n elements, then we say that I is n-generated; and, if every ideal of R is n-generated, we say that R has the n-generator property. It is well-known that if R has the n-generator property, then R has Krull dimension zero or one. Considerable interest has been shown in rings with the n-generator property (see for example [4], [13], [17], [la]) and in the problem of determining when a group or monoid ring has the n-generator property - either in general or for a specified choice of n, see [I], [lo], [ll], [14] and [19].
