摘要:
From July 1974–May 1976, observations were made on the catches of beach seines fishing at Lumley, Freetown. The larger species caught were counted and the abundance of the smaller species was qualitatively assessed. Sixty‐four species were recorded. The pelagic speciesSardinella eba(juvenile and young stages),Cybium tritor, Caranx carangus, Caranx senegalusandCaranx crysosdominated the catches.Chloroscombrus chrysurus, V. setapinnisandB. aurituswere caught in large quantities during the rainy season (May‐October) and they were also present during February. YoungSphyraena piscatorumandCaranx senegalusalso appeared during the rainy season and they probably represented broods spawned during the preceding months of September to Feb

摘要:
Observations were made on the growth of microphagous silver carp and bigheads in a tank housed under a horticultural polythene tunnel. It is suggested that the species may be of interest for cultivation and might also be useful in removing nutrients from eutrophic waters in the United Kingdom.

摘要:
Exposure to acutely lethal un‐ionised ammonia concentrations resulted in a 3.3‐fold increase in oxygen consumption. This was associated with increases in ventilation volume, respiratory frequency and amplitude. ‘Cough’ frequency was not significantly affected. Heart rate and dorsal aortic blood pressure were increased and cardiac output was estimated to have more than doubled. Dorsal aortic blood Po2decreased but no significant changes in erythrocyte number, haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, blood pH or P50 were observed. Possible toxic actions of ammonia were discussed and it was speculated that, as in mammals, ammonia may act by impairing cerebral energy met
