117 goosefish plasma from the Mediterranean coast have been analysed. Total plasma proteins gave mean values of 2.8±0.9 for males and 3.3±1.1 g/100 for females. The cellulose acetate and starch‐gel electrophoresis showed 7 and 13 fractions respectively. Different albumin patterns were observed but their distribution did not have a genetic basis. In 107 specimens a mean TIBC value of 278 ± 125 μg Fe% was found. The saturation coefficient of the transferrin was from 15–20%. The specimens had a single Tfband and one individual had a slower Tfband. The presence of an haptoglobin polymorphism has been suggested. Effects of mixtures of chloride salts of cadmium, copper and zinc on survival, whole body residues, and histopathology of mummichog,Fundulus heteroclitus(L.), were investigated in synthetic sea water at 20‰ salinity and 20°C. Mixtures of Cu2+and Zn2+as indicated by 96 h bioassay studies produced more deaths than expected on the basis of toxicities of individual components. Concentrations of Cd2+not ordinarily lethal exerted a negative effect on survival of fish intoxicated by salts of copper, zinc, or both.Atomic absorption determinations of Cd, Cu, and Zn residues in mummichog which survived 96 h exposures to each of these toxicants provided useful indices of total body burdens for these metals. Residues from survivors held in mixtures, especially Cd2+and Zn2+mixtures, did not conform to patterns observed for single elements. Whole body aggregates of Cd, Cu, and Zn from dead mummichogs were of limited worth owing to possible accumulation of these metals from the medium after death.Renal and lateral line canal lesions were noted in all fish subjected to copper concentrations of 1 mg/1 and higher. Renal lesions observed in fish immersed in mixtures of Cu2+and Cd2+assumed a damage pattern characteristic of Cd2+; with mixtures of Cu2+and Zn2+, lesion were typical of Cu2+‐induced damage. Lesions induced in lateral line epithelium by Cu2+were not affected by either Cd2+or Zn2+. Artificial fertilization was successfully applied in the culture ofBarbus holubi. By this method the fertilization potential was raised considerably and the mortality rate under normal conditions during the incubation period was less than 5 %. The handling and transferring of larvae to fertilized rearing ponds was simplified and an estimation of the seasonal production could be made without waiting for the fish to attain the fingerling stage. Normal breeding activities were not disturbed by frequent handling and natural breeding took place in ponds where the fish were kept.

The toxicity of rotenone was determined for seven species of fish and three species of invertebrates. The results show that there is a marked variation in sensitivity of different species to rotenone. The survival times of roachRutilus rutilus(L.) were reduced by a rise in temperature and also by a reduction in water hardness. Temperature affected the rate at which rotenone is degraded; 3 days after being prepared a solution containing 2 mg/1 of 5 % rotenone was non‐toxic to roach over a 7‐day period at 20°C, but it was still toxic for at least 11 days at 11.5°C. The occurrence of 12 helminth and 4 crustacean parasites on young whiting 0–2 years old from an inshore (Port Erin Bay) and an offshore (off Bradda Head) area of the Isle of Man were compared. No parasites were found on whiting 4.5–15 mm long and the intestinal digeneanLecithaster gibbosusRudolphi together with the larvae of the copepodCaligus rapaxM. Edwards were the first parasites to appear in whiting 15–42 mm long. This appears to be the only time during the life history of the whiting thatC. rapaxis of importance as a parasite. In whiting 6 months‐2 years old from off Bradda Head such helminths as the acanthocephalanEchinorhynchus gadiMuller and the digeneansPodocotyle atomonMuller andCryptocotyle linguaCreplin (metacercariae) were found in significantly fewer fish than in an equivalent group from Port Erin Bay. The differences are correlated with the availability of intermediate hosts and the different food spectra of the two groups of fish and are used to support the theory that inshore and offshore whiting of these age groups form separate populations and that the offshore fish may be more important than the inshore fish in replenishing stocks of older

The experiment was made in an attempt to modify the usual relationship in which young trout grow faster than young salmon in streams in which they occur together. A stretch of a trout stream was stocked with advanced salmon eggs, which produced fry earlier than the trout eggs laid naturally. The salmon grew faster than the trout and were longer than the trout at the end of the growing season. The mean length of 77.7 mm attained by the salmon is the largest known size reached by salmon in their first year when feeding on natural food supplies in streams in Scotland. Survival rate from egg planting to production of salmon of this mean length was high.

The food of 26 common fish species of the Lagos lagoon are given. It is shown that the food of the species covers a wide spectrum and most of the available invertebrates are being utilized as food by the fishes. The intra and interspecific relationship of the food and feeding habits of the various species are discussed.
