Lineament maps drawn from several LANDSAT images of a part of north Wales and western England display considerable variation in the number of lineaments identified. Analysis of the maps shows that it is not the case that maps with fewer lineaments are simply subsets of those with many lineaments. Rather, each map contains a high proportion of lineaments that are unique to it. Despite these differences, the same preferred lineament orientation is identified from almost all maps. These results imply that all available LANDSAT imagery may usefully contribute to a lineament analysis, little value may be placed on the density of lineaments seen on any one image and preferred lineament orientation is relatively easy to identify. It is concluded that guarded use may be made of lineament analysis in geology. Lineament maps may be employed to suggest hypotheses rather than to test them.

Large-scale colour infrared aerial photographs were obtained for part of a tropical coastal salt-marsh in south-east Queensland, Australia. Print reflectances were classified using a numerical divisive hierarchical procedure and related to field data. Vegetation characteristics such as species, size, dry weight and density were significantly associated with each spectral class al the general (macro) and at the detailed (micro) scales. At the macro scale there were four vegetation types: pure stands of tallSporobolus virginicus; medium-tallSporobolusdominant but with someSarcocornia quinqueftora; a mixed type; and finally a type dominated bySarcocornia. At the micro scale vegetation types were further differentiated by size and dry weight of the two dominant species.

Estimates of the distribution and biomass of macroalgae, mainlyFucus vesiculosus, have been made with good accuracy using aerial photography combined with SCUBA diving for ground-truth sampling. The study was performed in an area around a cooling water outflow from a nuclear power plant. No effects of heated water upon the distribution and biomass were registered except in the very close vicinity of the effluent outlet. The Fucus biomass was significantly correlated to water depth and degree of coverage.Fucus serratuswas for the first time recorded this far north along the Swedish east coast.

Based on a first-principles scattering theory applicable to small to moderate incidence angles, a new imaging model for ocean features is proposed. In contrast to the Alpers and Hennings Bragg-based model, the new model incorporates the full ocean wave spectrum, utilizes Hughes' suggested spectral decay rate formula and contains no adjustable parameters. For typical ocean currents, the new model predicts realistic values for L-band cross section modulations and comparable L-band and X-band cross section modulations. These latter results are shown to be due to backscatter from ocean waves that are significantly longer than the Bragg resonant wave. By comparison the Bragg-based imaging model is shown to predict that X-band modulations will be at least one order of magnitude weaker than L-band modulations.

摘要:
LANDSAT-5 TM images of the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl are analysed with the emphasis on estimating the reactor surface temperature. The investigation was done for TM channels 5 and 7 using the simulation model SENSAT developed at DFVLR. It accounts for the sensor characteristics (spectral response, IFOV) and target/background properties (size, temperature, emissivity). For the atmospheric part the LOWTRAN-6 model is used. The estimated surface temperature is 1000-1300 K for 29 April 1986, 3 days after the nuclear accident.
