The Arkansas tornadoes on 11 April 1976 were investigated using regular 30 min interval GOES digital infrared data, rawinsonde observations, Doppler sounder records and radar summaries covering the 3 hour time period immediately preceding the touchdown of the tornadoes. Clouds associated with the tornado were compared to other clouds that were not associated with tornadoes. It appears as if the altitude to which the overshooting cloud top penetrates above the tropopause is the major factor that controls tornado formation. Gravity waves were first observed at ionospheric heights when the overshooting cloud top began to penetrate the tropopause. Rawinsonde and radar observations were used to establish the background meterological conditions.

Studies on microwave surface scattering in The Netherlands have indicated the need for accurate radar systems for applications in remote sensing. An SLAR system with digital recording was developed and is now being used for several programmes. This system was designed with special attention to speckle reduction and system accuracy. The digital data are processed in a computer with algorithms for geometric and radiometric corrections. In the future aircraft position and attitude measurements will also be used in these correction algorithms. Examples of the results are shown.

This paper identifies three classes of feature observed on SEASAT synthetic aperture radar images that may be related to changes in water depth. The first is refraction of gravity waves. The second is the modulation of the surface roughness as tidal currents flow over changes in the depth of shallow water. The third is the detection of internal waves propagating from steep gradients in deep water.

A first-year sea-ice model, consisting of the dielectric properties and the geometry of ice and snow cover, has been used for interpreting brightness-temperature measurements of low-salinity sea ice. Dielectric measurements were made on about 400 ice samples, the salinity of which ranged from 0·1 to 1·5‰ by weight and the temperature from −18 to −01°C. Measurements were made with the electric field at angles of 0, 30 and 90° to the horizontal in the natural ice field. The effect of the fluctuations in the properties of ice and snow within the radiometer antenna beam has been included in the theoretical brightness-temperature model.

At the present time the European Space Agency is making preparations for a European remote-sensing-satellite programme. Within this programme, the first satellite to be launched will be an ocean-monitoring satellite ERS-1, whose payload will principally comprise active microwave instruments, namely a synthetic aperture radar (SAR), a scatterometer and an altimeter. To set up a proper basis for the discussion of the ground segment, the satellite and its payload are briefly introduced and the foreseen mission objectives of the programme are outlined. The paper then concentrates on that portion of the programme concerned with the ground facilities necessary for the control of the satellite on the one hand and payload data acquisition, processing, archiving and distribution on the other.
