摘要:
Project Indravati has been taken up to demonstrate the capabilities of remote-sensing data for the exploration of natural resources and also the structural linkages necessary to evolve a National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS). The Geological Survey of India, the National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization and the Forest Survey of India are the collaborating agencies under this project. The National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land-use Planning has supplied data on soils of the area. This densely forested, undercultivated region with a relatively virgin status in mineral exploration offers ample scope for using remote-sensing techniques in evaluating its natural resource potential.

An attempt has been made to correlate the optical-density values derived from LANDSAT imagery of a part of the oil field areas of Gujarat, India, with all the available surface and subsurface information by employing a mathematical model specifically developed for this purpose. An excellent two-dimensional linear correlation exists between optical-density values of tonal anomaly areas and gravity and magnetic values. A high correlation coefficient factor was also obtained when a multiple correlation of different parameters with optical density was carried out. This study has proved that such a synergistic, quantitative approach is much more useful in oil exploration than simple visual interpretation of remotely sensed data.

The growing population pressure and limited availability of land necessitates proper utilization of the available land through scientific land-use planning. Realizing this fact, a project using multiband aerial photography was taken up with following objectives: identification and mapping of areas under various land uses, study of geomorphology, identification of potential groundwater areas and identification of areas requiring soil conservation and reclamation measures. The major land-use classes mapped are agriculture, forest, wasteland, water bodies and public use. These are further subclassified. Some of the important observations are the reduction in the area under forest and the existence of a large area under wasteland. Geomorphological maps prepared depict slope, relief, drainage and vegetation. With the help of structural and geomorphological maps, the technique of identifying potential groundwater areas has been demonstrated. The land-use maps have a classification accuracy of 86 per cent whereas the accuracy of slopes in geomorphological maps is 72 per cent. The locational accuracy of the land features is 50-150 m on the ground. Visual interpretation of LANDSAT images led to the identification of nine land-cover classes while digital analysis enabled identification of twelve land-cover classes. Significant changes in land cover over a decade (1973-1982) have been noticed. This information has been used for preparation of a detailed land-use plan for the Idukki District.

In the present paper efforts have been made by the authors to study the changes in land use and land cover in Tripura using LANDSAT images of two different dates and to see how well data obtained help in the study of geographical phenomena with special reference to land use and land cover. The methodology for land-use mapping and limitations of LANDSAT data have been described in detail. The LANDSAT computer compatible tapes (CCTs) were analysed on the sophisticated interactive Multispectral Data Analysis System (MDAS) with the help of training sets of each category collected during field visits. Ninety per cent accuracy of these categories has been achieved when compared with existing data compiled on ground surveys by the working plan of the Division of Forest Department. The area of each land-use category was also calculated for monitoring land-use changes.

Today urban change detection is considered vital for monitoring the growth of an urban complex. Such a change detection system must essentially make use of the data available from conventional sources as well as that derived through remote sensing. In this study, which was conducted as an end-to-end experiment under the National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS) programme in India, an attempt was made to utilize this concept in monitoring the changes in Delhi, the capital city of India, during the period 1959-1980. The analysis was undertaken mainly on the basis of the data available in guide maps. The utility of aerial photography and LANDSAT imageries for such studies was evaluated. A simple digital urban information system was also developed.

Of late, deforestation and the resulting soil erosion, especially in the hilly regions of India, has become a matter of concern and is receiving attention at the highest official level in the country. In this context the study in the changes in forestry and land use of the Himachal Pradesh, known for its scenic beauty and forests, assumes special significance. In this study, which was undertaken as an end-to-end experiment under the National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS) programme in India, the land-use changes in the state were initially analysed on the basis of available topographical maps. Subsequently, the changes in the forest cover was evaluated with the help of LANDSAT data of 1973, 1977 and 1980.

Iron-ore deposits of the Kudremukh region in Karnataka State, India, were discovered at the beginning of the present century. These deposits have only recently begun to be exploited by the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company. As a result the land cover, particularly the grassland areas, are becoming disturbed.

The narrow stretch of Kerala coast in the south-western part of India shows dynamic changes in shoreline assuming a critical nature, which called for identification of causative factors. An attempt is made here to evaluate the use of LANDSAT imagery and air photographs in assessing and monitoring shoreline changes, using the Kerala coast as a case study, under the end-to-end experiments of the National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS).

Geomorphic processes greatly influence the industrial, commercial and recreational activities in the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay). LANDSAT data with their synoptic and repetitive coverage have been used in studying the distribution of suspended sediments, currents and fronts and for mapping shoreline configuration and wetlands. Visual interpretation of LANDSAT Multispectral Scanner (MSS) band 6 and 7 images and diazo colour overlays was carried out for the above purpose. Colour density slicing was performed on all four MSS images for the qualitative estimation of suspended sediments. The observation of suspended sediments suggests that during the monsoon many sediments brought in by various rivers remain in suspension and start settling down with the onset of the winter season. Tides also play an important role in the movement of the suspended sediments and fronts. The concentration of the suspended sediments is high on the mainland side during the flood tide and in the centre of the Gulf during the ebb tide. The fronts are located along the mainland side during the flood tide and on the Saurashlra side during the ebb tide. The currents in the Gulf are observed to be mainly influenced by the tides. Seasonal variation in the currents are mainly due to riverine discharge. The mapping of shoreline changes and geomorphic mapping has shown significant changes taking place in the Mahi and the Narmada estuaries. These changes have threatened the cooling pond of the Dhuvaran thermal power station in the Mahi estuary.

A joint experiments programme was undertaken between three government agencies to pool their resources and expertise to develop techniques for ocean-colour sensing. During October, November and December 1981 a remote-sensing experiment was carried out using vessel-based observations and aircraft underflights synchronous toNIMBUS-7 overpasses in coastal waters off Cochin. The area is well known for the abundance of surface schools of oil sardine (Sardinella hngicepsVal) and mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta). An aircraft sensor (Ocean Colour Radiometer) with spectral channels similar to that of the Coastal Zone Colour Scanner (CZCS) on board theNIMBUS-7 satellite was flown to collect data at different altitudes to examine the aspects of atmospheric correction and developing a pigment algorithm. From the analysis of the data it was found that (i) vessel-based measurement of upwelling/downwelling irradiance and the derivation of the spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient and reflectance factor is useful in understanding the optical properties of ocean water, (ii) upwelled radiance data derived from the aircraft sensor could be suitably used in the understanding of atmospheric effects and in developing a pigment algorithm and (iii) a non-linear relationship is observed between fish catch and pigment concentration.
