The heterogeneity of landscapes and the small size of fields has made it difficult to apply space remote sensing techniques to agriculture and forestry. However, with the availability of high resolution satellite data, research has led to a number of simple applications and, since the mid 1980s some large programmes have been launched, especially for agricultural information.

This contribution discusses the impact of Geographical Information System technology on remote sensing. It argues that greatest benefit is derived from remotely-sensed data when it is analysed together with, and in the context of, other geographical data. Some relevant European organizational initiatives and research activities are outlined.

Abstract. Landsat was launched as a research satellite but it soon became obvious that it had operational potential. Throughout the establishment of the Landsat series, and the introduction of SPOT and other satellites, there has been a continual forecast of a large commercial market potential. In the past eighteen years this commercial boom has failed to materialize; companies have come and gone and a number have continued to be successful.

Since the late 1970s Europe has witnessed a rapid, although sometimes unbalanced, expansion of remote sensing education and training, mainly at academic levels and in the field of international education. The increase of training for school teachers and for technicians is even less. Emphasis has been on scientific and technological aspects and on proven applications. Operational work, including the economics of remote sensing, and some promising or new applications require more attention.
