摘要:
The paper provides a review of research and development in the field of integrated geo-information systems (IGIS) in general and at the Natural Environment Research Council's Thematic Information Service in particular. Advanced data-structures based on quadtrees are emphasized and tesseral addressing techniques and intelligent knowledge-based system approaches introduced. The paper first identifies how digital cartography and remote sensing have developed and merged within the IGIS concept. Recognition of the need for IGIS systems has stimulated research which increasingly is being based on hierarchical data models and incorporating knowledge-based programming techniques. A number of relevant research programmes are reviewed before presenting a more detailed description of NERC research into spatial data-base design, spatial addressing and arithmetic, knowledge-based image segmentation and classification and an expert system for map and graphic output. The paper concludes by identifying those key areas of IGIS design and development which require continued research priority.

摘要:
A workshop on Geographical Information Systems (GISs) was held on 13 September 1985 London. The objectives of the meeting included: the most appropriate approaches to be taken for integrated GIS developments, the delineation of key research issues and the provision of information on government initiatives and organizational plans. The workshop concluded with a debate on the general aspects of GIS development especially with respect to research needs and directions, government policy, organization, interorganization co-ordination and collaboration, funding and user needs and market opportunities.

摘要:
A problem in using multispectral scanner(MSS) data for soil and landsystem analysis in north-west Europe is the poor spatial resolution which is insufficient to provide adequate within-field data. The SPOT satellite system will provide MSS data at 20m resolution and panchromatic data at 10m resolution. For any given ground feature the SPOT MSS mode will provide considerably more sample areas than LANDSAT 80m data. The object of this study is to determine how far variation in surface soil parameters can be detected and quantified on the basis of SPOT data.

摘要:
The urban fringe area is often characterized by a conflict between competing demands for land from many types of development; thus it requires active planning to achieve a landscape compatible with green-belt designation. Data were obtained from the NRSC SPOT-simulation campaign for an area near eastern Glasgow in an exercise to assess the value of remotely sensed data for surveying the structure of this urban fringe area. Digital enhancement and classification methods were applied to the data, identifying eight rural and six urban land-cover classes. Cloud and cloud shadow prevented a statistical accuracy assessment being performed. The most useful results were obtained by first stratifying the area into urban and rural subdivisions, followed by an interactive classification approach to the training and classification of desired fringe classes involving an analyst with local knowledge. Results showed that important urbanfringe classes of land cover can be readily identified from SPOT data, but the 20 m resolution is insufficient to discriminate inner city detail. These interim conclusions using suboptimal simulation data imply that high-resolution satellite data, rectified to a map base, classified and accuracy assessed, can be used as a survey tool to aid the physical planning of urban-fringe areas.

摘要:
In Northern Ireland peat and marginal land dominate uplands, form significant cover in lowlands and, together with the small-scale intricate nature of field systems, result in a landscape unlike many other parts of the United Kingdom.

摘要:
The fine spatial resolution offered by the SPOT system promises great improvements in the mapping of surface water and drainage networks. Simulated SPOT imagery of sites covering a variety of landscape units in Wales were examined. Identification of streams on the basis of spatial characteristics alone was found to be inefficient, and the use of thematic information was found beneficial. Strategies for interactive image enhancement are discussed, and the results of a visual interpretation of standard photoproducts are presented. The results of the interpretation of simulated SPOT data are compared with results of an interpretation of LANDSAT MSS data.

摘要:
A preliminary land-use classification of the River Main drainage basin has been produced using SPOT-simulation imagery. The most successful classification procedure was a band-3/band-2 ratio. The major problem of the imagery was the similarity between bogland vegetation and bare soil. This problem has been overcome by means of an edited box-classification and the resulting areal estimates of land-use have been found to agree closely with the known ground truth. The advantages and limitations of the SPOT system are discussed in the context of the Northern Ireland landscape.

摘要:
The use of SPOT-simulation data to identify and delineate the structure of effluent plumes in a tidal estuary is considered. Results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the data to locate the effluent discharged from short coastal outfalls and a long sea outfall, respectively, in the Firth of Forth. In addition, coastal water movements are revealed and the processed images are interpreted in terms of correlations between suspended sediment distributions and estuarine bathymetry variations. The relationship between the present results and previous studies at the same site are discussed.
