摘要:
In 1984 President Reagan announced that the U.S.A. intended to establish a space station in the 1990s. The programme then proposed by NASA involved the development of a low-orbit manned space station, a co-orbiting platform and at least two polar-orbiting platforms dedicated to remote sensing. Part of the announcement contained an invitation to other nations to participate in this venture. The response of ESA was the Columbus programme, within which the U.K. will probably take a leading role in the design and construction of one of the polar platforms. This paper looks at the background and justification for this remote sensing satellite in the context of a space station and then assesses the potential needs of part of the U.K. remote sensing community at the time of the satellite's launch.

摘要:
This paper presents a method for navigating AVHRR images in realtime without resetting to ground control points. The satellite orbital elements used for the orbit extrapolation are calculated by the ARGOS Data Collection and Location System. The method has been tested by ground control point location on ten NOAA-9 AVHRR images and gives satisfactory results; the positioning error varies from 1-6 to 10-4km with a mean value of 4-7km.

This paper analyses the radiometric accuracy of LANDSAT-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data and of LANDSAT-5 Multispectral Scanner (MSS) data, using concurrent TM and MSS images recorded simultaneously over the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The data sets were obtained from the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS), and have been preprocessed for geometric correction, and for radiometric 23calibration utilizing the in-flight calibration lamp data. The comparison of the TM and MSS normalized apparent reflectances computed for 12 different typical cover types using the post-launch calibration dynamic ranges shows the relevance of the CCRS processing systems. The significant linear regressions, obtained between channels from the two sensors, and the analysis of the ground reflectance corrected for atmospheric absorption and scattering as well as for pixel adjacency effects, can serve both to assess detector degradation with time and to rescale data to match those from other LANDSAT sensors.

The dramatic increase in erosion on Glaisdale Moor in the North York Moors is mapped using aerial photographs for 1973, 1978 and 1983. The erosion provides a focus for a quantitative analysis of the relationships between spectral reflectance and ground variables in areas of peat, bare soil and vegetation.

摘要:
This paper describes (1) an indoor measurement method to sludy backscattering characteristics of trees and (2) the result of the measurements made on two kinds of conifers,Sugi(Japanese cedar) and Sawara (Japanese cypress), at C- and X-bands for polarization combinations of HH, VV, HV and VH. The discussions on the backscattering and penetration characteristics of the trees using the measured ground truth data indicate the usefulness of this method to study microwave signatures of trees.

An automated post-processing system has been developed that interfaces with the raw image output of the operational digital SAR correlator. This system is designed for optimal efficiency by using advanced signal processing hardware and an algorithm design that requires no operator interaction, such as the determination of ground control points. The standard output is a geocoded image product (i.e. resampled to a specified map projection). The system is capable of producing multiframe mosaics for large-scale mapping by combining images in both the along-track direction and adjacent cross-track swaths from ascending and descending passes over the same target area. The output products have absolute location uncertainty of less than 50 m and relative distortion (scale factor and skew) of less than 0.1 per cent relative to local variations from the assumed geoid.

This study attempts to give an appraisal of the use of remotely-sensed data for different rice cropping patterns specific to India. Using even 80 m spatial resolution data of LANDSAT MSS in the form of false colour composites (FCCs), the rice crop was identified with an accuracy of 90 to 94 per cent from cropping patterns having more than 50 per cent of cropped area under rice. Cropping patterns having less than 50 percent of cropped area under rice and the rest of the area under multiple crops were identified with an accuracy of 75 percent. From the Indian experiences of higher spatial resolution multispcctral scanner data (3m resolution) and in the present study, it was observed that besides higher spatial resolution, acquisition of data at the critical crop windows (the periods of minimum overlap of greenness of rice with other crops) is necessary to reach 90 per cent accuracy for multiple cropping patterns.
