Four SPOT HRV images of the same area of East Anglia, acquired between February and September 1986, have been evaluated at the National Remote Sensing Centre for their potential use in agricultural land cover mapping. Spectral coincidence plots were used in feature selection. Information from single images contained a high level of spectral confusion between cover types. Vegetation index images and original data were used in supervised maximum likelihood classification. Higher classification accuracies were achieved using the original data than the vegetation indices. An overall classification accuracy of 71 per cent for 10 land cover types was improved to 88 per cent by reducing the number of classes. Although the imagery acquired for the study did not correspond well to key dates in the crop calendar, the broad land cover categories, cereal crops, field crops (sugar beet and vegetables), grass land and broadleaved woodlands could be mapped from SPOT. Using vegetation indices from the whole scene, a map of land cover has been produced for an administrative district within the scene. Comparison with simulated Thematic Mapper data indicates greater crop discrimination is provided in the mid-infrared part of the spectrum.

Housing pressures in south-east England have intensified the interest in the urban fringe areas. Planners need to assess the requirements for new housing developments and amenity areas. Remotely-sensed data can provide planners with visually impacting material and a method of monitoring the urban fringe on medium-term time scales using change detection procedures. The addition of other sources of geographical information will enable planners to make greater use of remotely-sensed data.

Stereo photography from the Ziess Metric Camera and the ITEK Large Format Camera were compared to assess the capability of Shuttle imagery to provide a feature source for terrain information. The Shuttle photography was set up in a Kern DSR-1 analytical plotter, utilizing an Earth curvature correction. A stereo pair of Metric Camera images was photographically edge enhanced and found to provide a useful supplement for feature extraction. The feature content of the stereo plots was analysed against an extract from the Spanish Military 1:100000 scale map. The accuracies achieved, both from Metric Camera and Large Format Camera images, were found to be to 1:100000 scale standards. The Metric Camera imagery was found to have insufficient definition for the extraction of the features required at 1:100000 scale. However, the Large Format Camera imagery was found to meet the minimum standards required for basic 1:100000 feature extraction.

A variety of procedures for change detection based on comparison of multitemporal digital remote sensing data have been developed. An evaluation of results indicates that various procedures of change detection produce different maps of change even in the same environment.

Two simple methods are proposed to improve the effectiveness of the supervised training in an interactive environment. An iterative procedure for cleaning training data is introduced to provide more appropriate class statistics (in terms of normality criterion) for classification. A binary graph representation of the training category set—called a separability tree—makes the checking of training statistics significantly easier. Some examples are presented with Landsat Thematic Mapper data concerning the use of both techniques.

In this paper we consider the restoration of airborne scanner images with microphonic noise. According to the practical generation process of micro-phonic noise, the noise can be assumed multiplicative and to be a stationary Markov random sequence. An adaptive noise smoothing filter, based on the Kalman filter and NMNV (non-stationary mean and non-stationary variance) image model, is developed. The microphonic noise in airborne scanner images can be effectively filtered out by this adaptive filter. Results of the algorithm on simulation and realistic images are shown.

Spectral reflectances of natural targets are measured in comparison with white standards, even when target reflectances are substantially different from those of the white standards. With some targets, the differences are sufficient to require a change in radiometer gain settings. Under these circumstances, measurement errors could likely be reduced if calibration were with standards whose reflectances were closer to those of the targets. This paper describes field testing that compared a black and a grey standard with a white barium sulphate standard. Variations in the reflectance properties of the black and grey standards, although higher than variations in the white standard, were less than 6 percent. The availability and use of such standards would simplify and increase the accuracy of field measurements.

Kodak neutral test cards are evaluated as reflectance standards for use in field spectroscopy. Laboratory measurements of spectral reflectance over the range 400-1100 nm show that the consistency between cards selected from a single manufacturers batch is good. Cards chosen from different batches manufactured over the period 1983-1988 were more variable in reflectance, especially in the reflective infrared. Cards from different batches which had been used in the field under controlled conditions were less variable in reflectance than those which had not been used at all, but they had an average reflectance 1-2 per cent higher than new cards in Thematic Mapper bands 1-4.

Despite their apparent complexity, remotely-sensed images present a simple structure specific to the remotely-sensed field. Using the concepts of variogram and fractal dimension, this paper proposes a classification of the textures of images based on simple models. Applications are given to segmentation and resampling.
