The turbulent wake of the USNS Hayes, a twin hulled ship, was imaged simultaneously by a thermal infrared scanner, an X-band coherent microwave radar and a 35 mm strip camera mounted in an NRL RP-3A aircraft. Thermal surface effects and centimetre-scale surface roughness characteristics were determined for both natural ship wakes and those treated with oleyl alcohol, an organic material which produced a monomolecular film on the surface of the turbulent wake. Extensive hydrographic, oceanographic and meteorological data were obtained during the surface wake study. The turbulent motions and the presence of the monomolecular film at the wake surface strongly influenced the centimetre-scale roughness. This influence appeared as a significant reduction in the microwave backscatter from the wake compared to the ambient surface. The persistence of this reduction in backscattered power increased when the film was present. Various computer codes were employed to analyse the digitized IR video data. They generated temperature contour plots and temperature profiles across the wake at various locations behind the ship. These computer plots along with the original 70 mm photographic representation of the data and the corresponding water temperature data indicated that all the wakes were significantly cooler than the surrounding ambient surface water. The thermal signatures of the wakes treated with the surface film were more persistent than the natural wakes and the coo! surface was maintained over a broader cross section of the treated wakes. These observations can be explained on the basis of changes in water surface properties, the ship wake hydrodynamics, wind stress considerations and surface film physics.

Radar altimeters have tracking systems which measure the range to the surface and produce averages of the radar pulse returns. Besides the range measurement, additional geophysical information can be extracted from the average pulse return. This paper describes and analyses a novel tracking and averaging algorithm, the interpolation tracker. It produces undistorted estimates of the mean pulse return in the presence of frequent gaps in the data stream. The theoretical analysis is confirmed by calculated first-order statistics from experimental data.

摘要:
We have devised, written and tested an implementation of the Gaussian Maximum Likelihood classification method for a commercial image processor. This has resulted in significant savings in execution time for the classification of multispectural remotely-sensed imagery, at very little cost to the accuracy, when compared to a software version of the same algorithm.

摘要:
Changes in the response characteristics of growing rice (Oryza saliva) from that of water at initial flooding to full canopy has been compared with that which would be hypothesized by the descriptive model of Kauth and Thomas and the quantitative model of McCloy. The close fit of the actual response to these models is then used to develop a method of using the response to classify rice based on the vector classifier of McCloy.

摘要:
A specialized system to monitor the rice growing areas of New South Wales has been developed. The monitor has been run for 2 years with accurate and consistent results. The monitor system starts with a land-cover mask. Each image is classified and the result used to update the mask using agronomic criteria. The criteria can, and often will, be changed between the different phonological stages of the crop. The system, with incremental revision of a land-cover mask, is quite different in approach to that adopted in multi-temporal image classification as utilized in LACIE and AgRISTARS.

L' étude vise á déterminr les possibilités d'identifier sur 1'imagerie SPOT certains éléments géomorphologiques et du couvert végétal en milieu aride. Les réponses spectrales des types de végétation steppique étant proches de celles des sols nus, leur caracterisation doit passer par une cartographie géomorphologique complétés par une recherche sur les relations vegetation-geomorphologie. Ces possibilités sont illustrées à partir des données SPOT images en couleurs composees (canaux bruts ou combinaisons de canaux) et de classifications supervisées appliquées à un territoire test d'environ 42000 ha du Haut Atlas oriental marocain.

This study deals with the structural analysis of joints in the uranium-bearing vein deposits and the surrounding enclosing granite rocks in G. El Missikat pluton, Central Eastern Desert, Egypt. The study includes the different structural features such as the intensity of joints, their opening and length for the different sets taken on a systematic pattern through and along the upper and lower contact of the uraniferous chalcedony vein, and their correspondence in the subsurface mining working.

摘要:
The regular 4-month remote sensing training course conducted at the Asian Regional Remote Sensing Training Centre, Asian Institute of Technology, covers basic remote sensing sciences, geographic information systems, applications, and project planning and management. Students are from Asia and in most terms are groups with various backgrounds and interests. Since most of them are not familiar with the environmental conditions in Thailand, field-work is necessary. Field-work also provides them with ground data collection and map verification practice. Several field-work procedures have been used in the past, but now the course offers just two field periods, each taking a different working approach. The first field-work period is 3 days on the south-east coast and consists mainly of demonstrations. The other longer field-work period lasts 5 days and is devoted to students’ own activities on projects proposed during the course work carried out in close consultation with their advisors.
