In 1982 Glenfarg Reservoir, Scotland, was drained to permit essential maintenance, exposing the floor of the flooded valley for the first time since damming in 1926. The accumulated deposits and the various, normally subaqueous, bed features were examined. A sidescan sonar survey undertaken after re-impounding was therefore interpreted against an exceptionally high level of ground information. The results of this control experiment, thought to be unique in the deployment of sidescan sonar, are described and discussed.

The use of remotely controlled scanning sonar is described as a site investigation tool in cavity surveillance. Abandoned and flooded limestone mineworkings beneath a proposed road in the West Midlands have been inspected; the resulting sonar records have been tested and matched with the only known abandonment plans of the mine. The use of Sonar enables the current status of the mine, pillars, roof and rooms to be assessed thoroughly before ground improvement and stabilization take place

Major volcanic eruptions of EI Chichon on 28 March 1982, 3 April 1982 and 4 April 1982 produced heavy tephra falls in surrounding areas. Data from the NOAA-6 and NOAA-7 satellites were used to determine the extent of the tephra falls. The satellite data showed a larger area of tephra deposition than was reported from conventional ground measurements

Secchi disk depth was recorded in the field all along the Swedish coastline and compared with LANDSAT data. Chromaticity analysis was applied in the evaluation to allow for Sun angle and atmospheric corrections. The data were used to study the relative nutrient and solids loading situations around the Swedish coast and as a basis for the applicability of laser bathymetry for water depth soundings

A joint research project involving NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry/Division of Forest Pest Management demonstrated the utility of LANDSAT data for assessing forest insect damage. A major effort within the project was the creation of a map-registered, statewide LANDSAT digital database for Pennsylvania. The database, developed and implemented on Pennsylvania State University computers, incorporates LANDSAT imagery, a LANDSAT-derived forest resource map and digitized data layers depicting Forest Pest Management district boundaries and county boundaries. A user-friendly data management system was also developed to provide an interface between the various layers of information within the database and image-analysis software. This system ensures that an automated assessment of defoliation damage can be conducted and summarized by geographic area or jurisdiction of interest

Ground-based radiometric measurements were conducted on six varieties of rice crop during an entire growth cycle using a hand-held seven-band radiometer. Concomitant measurements of some of the yield attributes were also made. Spectral data were also collected on a single variety grown under 12 different fertilizer treatments. Spectral data have been correlated with leaf area index, total wet biomass, total dry biomass, plant water content and final grain, straw and total yield. The results show similar temporal spectral responses of all six varieties and a strong correlation of agronomic parameters with spectral parameters derived from the near-infrared and red radiances. Red and near-infrared radiance ratio and normalized differences were found sensitive to the N fertilizer application but not to the P and K fertilizers. Linear correlations were observed between spectral parameters and final grain, straw and total yield

The Suits vegetative-canopy reflectance model is tested with an extensive set of field reflectance measurements made by the Laboratory for Application of Remote Sensing (LARS) for soybean canopies. The model is tested for the full hemisphere of observer directions as well as the nadir direction. The results show moderate agreement for the visible channels of the LANDSAT MSS and poor agreement in the near-infrared channel of LANDSAT MSS. An analysis of errors is given

This report is an account of findings derived from a visual examination of 1:250000 paper print enlargements of LANDSAT black-and-white images (from bands 5 and 7), paper print enlargements of LANDSAT false-colour composites (bands 4, 5 and 7) and maps of a representative part of the Mediterranean climate area of the Olympus-Pieria mountains and the surrounding area in northern Greece.

Principal components analysis of eight-channel data sets consisting of multitemporal LANDSAT MSS image pairs often generates higher-order principal components that are related to changes in ‘brightness’ and ‘greenness’. This is the expected result of such analysis in a wide variety of biological and geological environments where the original imagery is intrinsically two dimensional; the two dimensions are ‘brightness’ and ‘greenness’; and the change in land cover between images exceeds some threshold value.
