Simultaneous acquisition of surface chlorophyll-a concentrations for 39 samples from boats and Daedalus 1260 Multispectral Scanner data from a U-2 aircraft was conducted in the northern reaches of San Francisco Bay on 28 August 1980. These data were used to develop regression models for predicting surface chlorophyll-a concentrations over the study area for ebb-tide (8.40 a.m. P.D.T. (Pacific Daylight Time)) and flood-tide (3.10 p.m. P.D.T.) conditions. After selection of a single ‘best fitting’ model for both morning and afternoon data sets, the chlorophyll-a concentration was predicted for ebb and flood tide for the entire study area at approximately 40m × 40m resolution. The predicted spatial display of chlorophyll-a revealed a localized area of high phytoplankton biomass that has been inferred from field surveys and appears to be a common summer phenomenon.

An airborne laser fluorosensor has been used to make concurrent, near-continuous (microscale) profiles of chlorophyll-a, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the beam attenuation coefficient along the Columbia and Snake rivers. Cross-reference between profiles is used to expose anomalies and explain ambiguities encountered in their interpretation. The unique potential for remote sensing of DOC concentrations is based on a strong correlation with the fluorescence of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Similarly, the reciprocal of the remotely sensed water Raman emission is shown to be a reliable predictor of the beam attenuation coefficient.

摘要:
Many long sea outfalls discharge sewage effluent into the sea surrounding the United Kingdom. To monitor the dispersion and dilution performance of existing or planned outfalls, tracers can be released into the sewage and the resultant plume tracked by boat. In recent years aerial photography has proved to be a useful adjunct to boat surveys as it provides a synoptic view of a plume at one instant, which is something that a boat survey is unable to do as a result of tides, winds and currents.

The implementation of a non-iterative atmospheric correction algorithm is described in detail and the performance of the algorithm is illustrated for several CZCS images. Chlorophyll retrieval is attempted using linear, power and polynomial regression for ratios of corrected images and the best correlation coefficients are in the region of 0-9. The same images are analysed in three spectral bands using the ISOCLS clustering algorithm and ocean areas are stratified into subclass patterns which correlate well with ratios and sea-truth. The monocluster blocks approach is used to extract training statistics for maximum likelihood classification of ocean areas and the results compare favourably with corresponding ratio images.

摘要:
The effect of shadows cast by vertical protrusions on AVHRR data has been investigated. The AVHRR channel-1 data from the same ground area imaged from various viewing angles are examined. These data were obtained from nine orbits during eight successive days. The atmospheric effects were removed and an analysis of the resulting surface-leaving radiance shows that the effect of shadows is an important factor contributing to off-nadir viewing effect on the remotely sensed data.

Two radiance models within LOWTRAN 6 are compared: the ‘zero-order’ scattering, as implemented in standard LOWTRAN 6, and the ‘conservative’ scattering algorithm. The comparison is performed for slant paths from ground to space in infrared window regions 3-5 μm and 8-14 μmi. Deviations between both models depend on the spectral region and the visibility. Considerable discrepancies of more than 10 K in radiation temperature occur for 90° zenith angles, i.e. paths tangent to the Earth's surface. It is shown that an artifact, namely the radiance dip near the 90° zenith angle, does not occur in the ‘conservative’ scattering model.
