摘要:
Vibrational (infrared) spectroscopy is often referred to as molecular spectroscopy to emphasize that it is the source of much of the known molecular-structure data, e.g., molecular symmetry, bond lengths, and bond angles [1]. Coupled with statistical mechanics, vibrational spectroscopy can also allow the calculation of thermodynamic properties [2]. Of course, catalysis is by definition a kinetic phenomena, and therefore it is noteworthy that vibrational spectroscopy has also been used to follow the transient response of kinetically significant (as opposed to stable, unreactive) intermediates on heterogeneous catalysts [3–5].

摘要:
It appears pertinent for the opening of this review to cite the work of Ipatiew [1]. In 1901 he reported that certain metals catalyzed the decomposition of alcohols even above the melting points of the catalyst metals, However, he gave no special attention to the catalytic activity of the molten metal (liquid metal), and thus 20 years or more elapsed without any significant advances in the research on the catalysis of the liquid metal.

摘要:
Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measures the vibrational modes of a small quantity of molecules that are included in or near the insulating layer of a metal-insulator-metal tunnel junction [l, 21. Figure 1 stows two metal electrodes separted by a thin insulating layer. If this layer is thin enough (of order 20 A) and if a voltage V is applied between the two electrodes, an electron current will flow from one electrode to the other. The maximum energy of the tunneling electrons will be of order eV. If there is a molecule in or near the insulating layer with a characteristic vibrational mode energy hv, this vibrational mode may or may not be excited by the tunneling electron. The most important factor turns out to be simply, does the tunneling electron have enough energy? In particular, is eV ⩾ hv?

摘要:
The Seventh International Congress on Catalysis was held in the Keio Plaza Hotel, Tokyo, June 30-July 4, 1980. The proceedings were copublished in 1981 by Kodanaha Ltd., Tokyo and Elsevier, Amsterdam. The proceedings will include the plenary lectures (5), contributed papers (104), abstracts of communications (64), and the discussion of contributed papers. It is unfortunate for those who did not attend that discussion of the communications could also be included. The communications were an excellent innovation and, it may be hoped, a new tradition for future Congresses. They had a later acceptance date than contributed papers and were limited in length to 20% of that allowed for regular papers (10 pages). All communications were presented on the opening day of the Congress. Because they were brief and, in many cases, were research progress reports, the discussion was lively.

摘要:
The utilization of petroleum is managed primarily by heterogeneous catalysis. This technology at least quadruples the usefulness of a given amount of crude oil as compared to thermal processing. It seems clear that a similar increase in the usefulness of other fossil fuels such as coal and oil shale should be possible, In view of the energy shortage which we have all come to realize in the last year or so, the important central role of heterogeneous catalysis seems to be obvious.
