摘要:
In the last 10 years an extensive research and development effort has been made to implement the catalytic removal of noxious constituents from automotive exhaust. This effort is finally coming to fruition as this paper is going into print. Vehicles sold in the United States in 1975 will be, in a significant proportion, equipped with catalytic devices. The incorporation of a miniature chemical conversion plant into millions of moving objects operating under widely varying conditions, while being required to assure reliable performance for extended usage periods, has called for the combined skills of scientists, engineers, and designers in several industries. Even so, at present only the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons has reached the implementation stage. The catalytic removal of nitrogen oxides has turned out to be a still more difficult task. This review will summarize very briefly the present state-of-art of the catalytic devices for the treatment of NO, emissions, but its larger part will be concerned with the scientific background underlying the operation of the devices themselves.

摘要:
Historically, the interest in catalysis by alloys shows periods of growth and periods of stagnation. The first period of growing interest was in the thirties when alloys were used to disclose the role of the order-disorder phenomena (see, e.g., Refs. 1–3). In the fifties alloys were used intensively to establish the role of the electronic structure of solids in catalysis (see, e.g., Refs 3–5). It was a period of very fast development in catalysis, the penetration of theoretical and experimental physics into catalysis initiated by the authors of The Electronic Theory of Catalysis (Dowden [5], Rienäcker [2], Schwab [6], Eley [TI, Wolkenstein [a], Hauffe [9], and others), it brought much news and the experimental material on catalysis increased substantially. However, as far as the research on alloys itself is concerned, its success was debatable. The President of the IVth Congress on Catalysis in 1968, when closing the congress said about this period: “These systems (i.e. alloys) have been a dangerous temptation for many scientists, so that we had a rather dismal situation, from the point of view of evaluating the effectiveness of catalytic measurements, in that almost every researcher obtains results contradicting the data of those preceding him”[Kinet. Catal. (USSR), 10, 1 (1969), p. 71.

摘要:
Recent developments in instrumentation have led to the renaissance of Raman spectroscopy. Initial studies have shown that the technique may be used successfully to study surface chemical problems and it now seems appropriate to review these initial studies. The intent of this review is to help new workers in the field and to indicate some of the powers and limitations of the method.

摘要:
The Mösbauer effect [l] is the recoil-free emission and absorption of low-energy gamma rays by the nuclei of atoms in solids. Unlike the “free” atom so commonly employed in theoretical considerations, the atom in a solid possesses some unique properties not experienced by the “free” atom. The splitting of atomic energy levels by the crystal field surrounding an atom in a solid is one example. The Mössbauer effect is another which makes Mösbauer spectroscopy a powerful method for the study of the properties of solids and, by logical extension, the properties of solid surfaces.

摘要:
Our purpose is to review current and past research on the unusual influence of inert, diluent gases on the observed rate of heterogeneous and catalytic reactions. This is a subject that has received little attention in the literature since Forestier's review of 1958 [1]. However, unlike Forestier's article, our main concern will be with the influence of diluent gases on catalytic reactions rather than simply on heterogeneous reactions and phase changes.

摘要:
Molten salts have been used for many centuries in metal extraction, glass manufacture, and, more recently, in applications such as fused salt electrolysis. Usually dissociated into ions, they are often good solvents for oxides, carbides, nitrides, and metals. Their high thermal stability, low vapor pressure, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and low viscosity may be expected to confer on them an increasing technological importance in the future, and as a result research on their physical and chemical properties has grown markedly in recent years. Thermodynamic and transport properties [l-41 have been surveyed within the last decade, and Sundermeyer [5] has also reviewed their use as reaction media. A selection of catalytic reactions has been discussed by Kenney [6].

摘要:
One of the major problems in the investigation of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions involves an understanding of the nature of molecular species and processes which are formed or take place, respectively, on the active sites of a catalytic surface.
