摘要:
One of the eminent contributors to the field reviewed here launched, more than 10 years ago [1], a public appeal for closer cooperation between physicists and chemists on the problems raised by chemisorption and catalysis on solid surfaces. Enriched by many stimulating remarks, pointing to various directions of surface research, this appeal deserved more success; but solid state physicists, by and large, have been much too busy with clear-cut problems of their own. Besides, it is only very recently that semiconductor surface physics [2] has come of age.

摘要:
One of the more important problems that a chemist or chemical engineer may encounter is the determination of the mechanism and/ or model for a chemical reaction system. This problem may be encompassed within the broader area of identification [30–32] which ranges from the one extreme where no a priori information regarding the system representation is known, to the other extreme where much is known about the system. The development of a suitable chemical kinetic representation for the experimental reaction system lies somewhere between these two extremes. This results from the fact that there usually exist certain postulated models to represent experimental kinetic data; however, the determination of the best constants in these mechanistic models and perhaps the discrimination among a number of alternative models usually remain as vexing questions.

摘要:
Although the remarkable structural and surface properties of those crystalline aluminosilicates classified as zeolites have been known for some considerable time, it is only quite recently that their catalytic properties have been recognized and utilized. The properties of zeolites as catalysts have been recently discussed in detail in this journal by Turkevich [1]. Many review articles give details of their structural [2–5] and surface [6–9] properties, as studied by classical methods. This review will be restricted to information on zeolites obtained by applying one of the newer methods of studying the solid-gas interface-infrared spectroscopy.

摘要:
Heterogeneous catalysis is inherently a complex subject, and progress toward making it a science rather than an art has required knowledge and techniques in many fields. In recent times physical tools such as electron microscopy and optical and magnetic resonance spectroscopy have seen increasing use and have yielded many interesting new results. This paper is a discussion of Mössbauer spectroscopy, a tool capable of giving new information concerning catalysis. In the first half we review the physical parameters which play a role in the Mössbauer effect and discuss briefly the techniques used in its measurement (the general references for this section are [1] and [2]). In the last half we discuss applications of the effect to studies of adsorption and catalysis with examples from the literature and our own exploratory work.

摘要:
As the theoretical corrosion (potential-pH) diagram shows, palladium metal is thermodynamically stable at all pH's in the presence of aqueous solutions free from strong oxidizing, reducing, or com-plexing agents [1]. In practice, palladium is acted upon by water only at high temperatures [2] and it does not tarnish when exposed to moist air. Moreover, at ordinary temperatures this metal is not attacked by nonoxidizing acidic solutions.

摘要:
I would like to start by noting the purpose and the limitations of this review. Evidently, a complete discussion of inhibition effects in homogeneous gas reactions, and of the various interpretations which have been advanced for them, cannot be attempted in an article of this length. Accordingly, the discussion will be confined to those catalytic effects which provide evidence for the process and mechanism of inhibition.

摘要:
One of the basic parameters characterizing the bond between a chemisorbed atom (or molecule) and the surface is its dissociation energy. It is difficult, however, to determine the bond energy and therefore it becomes necessary to turn to some other quantity, which is sufficiently close to the bond energy and which can be determined without much difficulty. Such a quantity is theheat of adsorption. Heat of adsorption is defined as the difference between the total energy of the adsorption system prior to and after the adsorption process, i.e., it equals the sum ofallenergy changes connected with adsorption. Thus the experimentally determined value for the heat of adsorption is obviously closely related to the bond energy of the chemisorbed particle, though this relation is not quite simple [1,2].

摘要:
The Fourth International Congress on Catalysis, Moscow, June 23–29, 1968, was directed largely to the problems involved in the prediction of catalytic action. Most of the 86 papers presented and discussed were concerned directly with this main topic; however, several were devoted to such related topics as mechanism of catalytic reactions, structural studies, and mechanisms of chemisorption.

摘要:
A Japan-United States Seminar on Catalysis was held in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan, on May 5–10, 1968. The seminar was organized on the Japanese side by Professors Osaki and Morikawa of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and on the United States side by John Turkevich of Princeton University. The seminar was sponsored by the United States-Japanese Scientific Cooperation Program initiated by President Kennedy and Premier Saito. The program is administered in the United States by the National Science Foundation, with Dr. Walter Hodge, Director, and Richard S. Riess, Staff Associate. On the Japanese side, it was administered by the Japanese Society for Promotion of Research.
