Energy costs have increased at a more rapid rate than overall household costs in recent years. The effects of these increased costs upon families' consumption of goods and services, as measured by cutbacks in and across consumption categories and cutbacks in necessities, were studied in relation to three variables: (1) family income level; (2) perceived effect of energy cost changes upon life in the last five years (well‐off); and (3) belief that energv consumption could be reduced by one‐fourth in the next year. Family income level was significantly related in a negative direction to each measure of cutback in consumption. This paper is a revised version of the author's contribution to an international seminar on ‘Training of Consumer Advisers’ (a joint seminar of the Danish Ministry of Education, the International Organization Consumers' Union and the Council of Europe, held in Aarhus, Denmark during February 1984). It is suggested that, in order to be effective, consumer advisers need a somewhat different and more comprehensive training than the one usually offered. Thus, in addition to established areas of theoretical and practical competence, prospective consumer advisers need a much broader understanding of the socio‐economic and psychological conditions governing modern life. Food patterns of 105 two‐parent, two‐child households in South Louisiana were studied. A survey questionnaire was used for data collection. Age of youngest child was a highly significant factor in determining nutritional adequacy of family dietaries as measured by servings from the basic four food groups. Families with young children prepared more fruit and vegetables. Educational level of the spouse was an important factor in breakfast patterns; those with partial college educations served more meat. 摘要:
The aim of this study was to describe consumer opinions and behaviour in the purchase situation. Sixty female customers, who had bought one of the food items chosen as focus foods (milk snacks, bread, beverages, condiments) of the study, were interviewed in six supermarkets in the metropolitan area of Helsinki. The subjects most often quoted good taste and familiarity as grounds for the selection of focus foods, but not the additive content. The majority of subjects considered Finnish foods to be mainly good and safe although 17 expressed some concern about food additives. The general concern of the subjects about additives did not conform with their actual buying behaviour.

A survey of teachers, parents and students was conducted to determine appropriate content for a semester course in clothing and textiles. A review of literature including research, curriculum guides, projections of future trends in clothing and textiles and knowledge needs of consumers served as the basis for developing the instrument. The initial list of topics identified was reduced to 13 major topics and 66 specific items by a panel of eight experts. The instrument was used to survey 1200 teachers, parents and students. A total of 327 surveys were returned. Respondents were varied on most demographic characteristics identified. Results were analysed to determine the significance of differences between the responses of the three groups. Respondents indicated that no more than Homemaking I should be required as a prerequisite for a clothing and textiles semester course and that simple clothing construction skills should be included. The overall rankings of the 13 major topics was: wardrobe planning, clothing selection, clothing construction, buying clothing, clothing care, clothing alterations, sewing tools and equipment, effects of clothing on individuals, design in clothing, textiles, family clothing, influences on fashion, clothing and textiles careers. Significant differences between groups existed for mean importance scores of 36 of the 66 specific topics. Teachers' mean importance scores differed from those of parents and/or students on 33 topics. Recommendations for content of a clothing and textiles semester course were based on the findings.

The likely allocation of extra income from the 1982 U.S. income lax rate reduction by a group of consumers was investigated. Samples of brown 50% polyester/50% cotton momie cloth with a fluorocarbon finish were commercially laundered using a carbonate‐built detergent in soft (0 ppm) water. The appearance of the laundered samples was assessed by subjective pilling ratings and instrumental colour determinations; the performance properties examined were tear and tensile strength, abrasion resistance and ability to release oil. The results showed that pilling was at its maximum after 20 launderings. The depth of colour decreased with increased number of cycles and, in most cases, was not accompanied by change of hue Tear and tensile strength were not affected by the laundering process. The fluorocarbon finish on the unlaundered control increased the weight loss due to Accelerator abrasion, thus that due to repeated launderings was significantly less. The finish protected the fibres from flex abrasion, increasing the number of cycles required to rupture the fabric and only the sample laundered 60 times had significantly greater resistance.
