This article reminds colleagues about the relative merits of using an electronic systems approach and a component-led approach to designing and making electronic circuits. It is written as a dialogue between two enthusiastic teachers of electronics, each of whom extols the virtues of one or other method. Teacher S promotes the systems approach to teaching electronics. Teacher C promotes the components approach. These two approaches are explained as the discussion gathers pace.

Automatic systems, such as lights which switch on when it goes dark, and alarm systems to warn of fire, flood, intruders or pencil theft are both big business. At a simple level, they can be tackled by 11–14 year olds.
