摘要:
In the past decade there has been a substantial increase in the number of introductory statistics courses taught at the undergraduate level. Many have argued successfully for the extensive use of writing in such courses in an attempt to highlight the interdisciplinary role of statistics and acknowledge that a good statistician must also be good at summarizing his or her analyses to nonstatisticians. This point was made by Radke-Sharpe, who went on to add that incorporating writing demands time, energy, and creativity, but that it is usually well worth the effort. This article discusses the efforts made by the authors to include writing in their courses, and some of the techniques that made the writing process painless and productive for both students and faculty.

摘要:
The correlation of the pair of lognormal random variables obtained by exponentiating a pair of bivariate normal variables provides a simple example of an asymmetrically bounded correlation coefficient for continuous variates. The example illustrates certain hazards in employing correlation coefficients as measures of association.

摘要:
In this note it is shown that the Fisher information can be related to elasticity, a very important concept in economics. This economic concept can be used to provide a more intuitive meaning of the Fisher information in some important situations.

摘要:
In this sectionThe American Statisticianpublishes announcements and selected reviews of teaching materials of general use to the statistical field. These may include (but will not necessarily be restricted to) curriculum material, collections of teaching examples or case studies, modular instructional material, transparency sets, films, filmstrips, videotapes, probability devices, audiotapes, slides, and data deck sets (with complete documentation).

摘要:
This department publishes articles of interest to statistical practitioners. Innovative applications of known methodology may be suitable, but sizable case studies should be submitted to other journals. Brief descriptions and illustrations of new developments that are potentially useful in statistical practice are appropriate. Acceptable articles should appeal to a substantial number of practitioners.

摘要:
Box and Draper suggested two methods for augmenting resolution III fractional replications of a 2nexperiment. One method identifies a particular factor of interest and augments the design to obtain estimates of the corresponding main effect and all two-factor interactions involving that factor so that they are not aliased with other two-factor interactions. The second method provides an augmented design that allows one to estimate all main effects unaliased with two-factor interactions. In particular, the second method provides foldover designs. Both methods consist of adding another fraction to the original design. The purpose of this note is to show how these augmentation methods can be obtained as fractional replications of a larger design involving an additional blocking factor. This provides both a simple justification of the blocking methods and a basis for discussing hidden block effects.

摘要:
This department includes the two sectionsNew Development in Statistical ComputingandStatistical Computing Software Reviews; suitable contents for each of these sections are described under the respective section heading. Articles submitted for the department, outside the two sections, should not be highly technical and should be relevant to the teaching or practice of statistical computing.

摘要:
The stepwise regression algorithm that is widely used is due to Efroymson. He stated that theF-to-remove value had to be not greater than theF-to-enter value, but did not show that the algorithm could not cycle. Until now nobody appears to have shown this. To prove that the algorithm does converge, an objective function is introduced. It is shown that this objective function decreases or can occasionally remain constant at each step in the algorithm, and hence the algorithm cannot cycle provided that Efroymson's condition is satisfied.
