摘要:
An elementary discussion, suitable for classroom presentation, is given on how to express sums of squares as matrix quadratic forms for two simple balanced ANOVA problems. The material presented should be useful for illustrating how Kronecker products and idempotent matrices arise in the theory on quadratic forms in normal random variables.

摘要:
In recent years many national bodies concerned with American education have recommended integrating topics from probability, statistics, and data analysis into the K-12 mathematics curriculum. A variety of efforts are under way to carry out these recommendations, including the ASA's Quantitative Literacy Project. This report describes another such effort. A statistician and a mathematics educator offered current high school teachers a one-semester course that would give them a background knowledge of statistics to help them implement the recommendations. In designing the course, we unearthed some resources that might be of use to others. In offering the course, we experienced a variety of successes and failures that may be of interest to anyone else considering a similar course. These experiences led us to rethink how we would teach such a course in the future and to consider alternative approaches to teacher (re)training. We describe our experience and provide a list of suggestions we hope might aid in implementing the new curriculum recommendations.

摘要:
Statistical consulting is an integral part of the duties of most statisticians employed as faculty at universities or colleges. The recognition given for this activity has traditionally been in the area of “service” and the weight assigned this activity in the present reward system is that of any other service activity. A recently released report by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching offers a new definition of scholarship which includes the scholarship of application—the application of knowledge to solve consequential problems. This means a formal recognition as scholarship for the activities of consulting statisticians. What is needed for this recognition to become an integral part of the reward system is adequate documentation and evaluation procedures.

摘要:
Techniques for graphing paired data are considered. A conventional method frequently used when reporting scientific results, particularly in medical journals, involves representing pairs of measurements by straight line segments titled at different angles related to the differences between the components of the data pairs. However when the sample size is only moderately large, this type of display can become cluttered and thus uninformative due to overlap. It is suggested that a new graph that combines features of ANOVA plots and multivalued dot charts may provide a more effective visual display of paired data. A designed experiment in data perception using simulated data provides some evidence in favor of this parallel line plot.
