摘要:
Geometry is a very useful tool for illustrating regression analysis. Despite its merits the geometric approach is seldom used. One reason for this might be that there are very few applications at an elementary level. This article gives a brief introduction to the geometric approach in regression analysis, and then geometry is used to shed some light on the problem of comparing the “importance” of the independent variables in a multiple regression model. Even though no final answer of how to assess variable importance is given, it is still useful to illustrate the different measures geometrically to gain a better understanding of their properties.

摘要:
We compare the accuracy of two approximate confidence interval estimators for the Bernoulli parameterp. The approximate confidence intervals are based on the normal and Poisson approximations to the binomial distribution. Charts are given to indicate which approximation is appropriate for certain sample sizes and point estimators.

摘要:
The most critical point in developing dynamic introductory statistics courses for nonstatisticians is deciding whether to teach statistical reasoning (concepts and thinking), statistical methods (computations), or both. Statistical reasoning should precede statistical methods. Workshop-based courses effectively provide situated learning and an intimate teaching environment. Use real (or realistic) data, graphics, and teach exploratory data analysis before classical methods. Evaluate the students' levels of statistical anxiety prior to and during the course.

摘要:
In response to a change in federal policy, the state of Iowa raised the maximum speed limit on its rural interstate highway system to 65 miles per hour (mph). Higher speeds are generally thought to produce economic benefits, largely due to reductions in travel time. However, higher speeds are also associated with increased accident risk. Our study examines whether a significant change in fatal and major-injury accident rates can be detected following the implementation of the higher speed limit. Our analysis attributes a 20% increase in the number of state-wide fatal accidents to the speed limit change. The impact is largest on rural interstates where the number of fatal accidents increased by 57%, implying two additional fatal accidents each quarter. Our analysis fails to find an impact on the number of major-injury accidents.
