摘要:
Because little is known about properties of lines fitted by eye, we designed and carried out an empirical investigation. Inexperienced graduate and postdoctoral students instructed to locate a line for estimatingyfromxfor four sets of points tended to choose slopes near that of the first principal component (major axis) of the data, and their lines passed close to the centroids. Students had a slight tendency to choose consistently either steeper or shallower slopes for all sets of data.

摘要:
The behavior of the sample coefficient of determination is examined for some arrangements of independent variable values in a simple linear regression with normally distributed error terms. Numerical values of means and standard deviations are presented that provide some insight into the influence of range and arrangement of independent variable values and sample size on the size of the sample coefficient of determination. Some asymptotic results are given.

摘要:
The easily computed, one-sided confidence interval for the binomial parameter provides the basis for an interesting classroom example of scientific thinking and its relationship to confidence intervals. The upper limit can be represented as the sample proportion from a number of “successes” in a future experiment of the same sample size. The upper limit reported by most people corresponds closely to that producing a 95 percent classical confidence interval and has a Bayesian interpretation.

摘要:
The distribution of a random linear combination of standard normal variates is derived. Then the weak law of large numbers is applied to obtain a central limit theorem for normal scale mixtures.

摘要:
Three sampling designs are considered for estimating the sum ofkpopulation means by the sum of the corresponding sample means. These are (a) the optimal design; (b) equal sample sizes from all populations; and (c) sample sizes that render equal variances to all sample means. Designs (b) and (c) are equally inefficient, and may yield a variance up toktimes as large as that of (a). Similar results are true when the cost of sampling is introduced, and they depend on the population sampled.
