This article presents a simple proof that a symmetric random walk on a hexagonal lattice inR2is recurrent. The goal of this article is educational, to enrich the list of interesting and intuitively appealing examples for teaching probability to advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students.

Some Studentized linear estimates do not follow Student'stdistributions because the numerator and denominator are not independent. Recognized in residuals, the problem can occur in other contexts as well. A remedy is easily obtained by adding another predictor variable to the regression model that removes the shared degree of freedom.

Several statistical applications demand the adoption of models in which the response is binary but the outcomes of different trials exhibit some degree of correlation. Although the independent case is well known and treated even in elementary textbooks, results on correlated Bernoulli trials are hardly found in the literature. Analogues of the binomial and negative binomial distributions are presented in this article when the correlation is of the Markovian type. Probability-generating function, probability mass function, mean, and variance are derived. The analysis allows illustration of a variety of techniques useful in the study of discrete distributions appropriate for second-level probability courses. An example on customer brand switching discussed by Olkin, Glesser, and Derman is presented as illustration.

Rosenbaum developed the sliding-square plot to display simultaneously a scatterplot of paired data, a boxplot of their differences, and a boxplot of each marginal distribution. We extend the sliding-square plot to include the two-period, two-treatment crossover sum-difference plot, with corresponding boxplots of scaled sums and differences for each sequence. The plot is useful for displaying characteristics of the data together with evaluating carryover effects, treatment effects and the assumptions under which they are tested.
