摘要:
Letters from W.S. Gosset to R.A. Fisher are used to describe Gosset's first contacts and growing friendship with Fisher, their collaboration over the tabulation of Student'st, and the wider applications of Gosset's work that were made possible by Fisher's extension and generalization of the distribution theory in the early 1920's. These letters reveal Gosset's practical approach to the statistical problems of his brewery work that “naturally required” the solutions for which the name of Student is famous; and they exhibit his appealing character, modest yet self-reliant, in relationship not only to Karl Pearson and R.A. Fisher but to statistical assistants still in training.

摘要:
Lack of numeracy is due mainly to the way data are presented. Most tables of data can be improved by following a few simple rules, such as drastic rounding, ordering the rows of a table by size, and giving a brief verbal summary of the data.

摘要:
This article identifies three consulting roles—helper, leader, and colleague; recommends that statistical consultants ask more questions about basic mechanisms; suggests that statistical consultants regard their primary responsibility as providing guidance about the scientific method itself; discusses the need for continuing education to help improve consulting skills; and describes Wisconsin's Master's degree examination, which was designed to help students become effective practicing statisticians.

摘要:
A list of the tasks that must be accomplished by practicing regression analysts was compiled and used to derive a detailed list of course objectives for a regression analysis course. This article presents the tasks and objectives derived and discusses some of the author's experiences in using this approach.

摘要:
A structure diagram symbolization for balanced complete experimental designs of the type encountered in standard balanced analysis of variance (ANOVA) calculations is discussed. From the symbolization, rules of formula derivation for obtaining entries in the traditional ANOVA table are introduced. The method requires recognition of characteristic sets of factors which are combined using the concept of formal interaction. Expected mean squares,F-test ratios, and variance component estimates can be quickly derived using the symbolic method.

摘要:
This article discusses a representation of Pearson's chi-square for independence in two-way contingency tables in terms of conditional probabilities of two categorical random variables and proposes a functional interpretation of Pearson's chi-square. This representation is suggested for use in the teaching of statistical independence between categorical variables.

摘要:
Control languages used to specify experimental designs to ANOVA programs must have syntax and semantics to express several different types of information about the data and their analysis. The languages associated with several widely distributed ANOVA programs are compared for their flexibility and legibility in expressing the set of designs encountered in design texts. The types of output of the programs are listed.
