摘要:
Computer-intensive algorithms, such as the Gibbs sampler, have become increasingly popular statistical tools, both in applied and theoretical work. The properties of such algorithms, however, may sometimes not be obvious. Here we give a simple explanation of how and why the Gibbs sampler works. We analytically establish its properties in a simple case and provide insight for more complicated cases. There are also a number of examples.

摘要:
Nonparametric regression is a set of techniques for estimating a regression curve without making strong assumptions about the shape of the true regression function. These techniques are therefore useful for building and checking parametric models, as well as for data description. Kernel and nearest-neighbor regression estimators are local versions of univariate location estimators, and so they can readily be introduced to beginning students and consulting clients who are familiar with such summaries as the sample mean and median.

摘要:
The shape of a probability distribution is often summarized by the distribution's skewness and kurtosis. However, alternative measures of skewness and kurtosis based onLmoments quantify deviations from the Normal distribution in a way that is more concordant with the powers of goodness-of-fit tests of Normality.

摘要:
Choice between two treatments,AandB, is sometimes based on the probability thatAwill be more effective (score higher, say) thanB.Ideally, to estimate this probability a sample of subjects would receive bothAandBand the proportion of(A — B)differences which are positive would be used as the estimate. Often, however, both treatments cannot be given to each subject, and inference is based on a trial using two independent samples. Unfortunately, probability structures exist for whichP(A — B> 0) for two independent samples is not equal toP(A — B> 0) for matched samples. The two-independent-sample Wilcoxon test statistic addresses the former probability and hence cannot be used to answer the question, “Is the probability thatAwill do better thanBgreater than 1/2?” unless further assumptions are made.

摘要:
For a variety of introductory audiences, there are strong practical and pedagogical reasons for the early teaching of statistical interval methods that are often treated as “advanced” topics, if at all. There are also simple, effective ways of making this early introduction. This expository article discusses the elementary teaching of one-sided statistical intervals, prediction intervals, and tolerance intervals for both (one-sample) nonparametric and (general) normal theory contexts.

摘要:
Two applications of the analysis of lottery games as an instructional tool are described. First, the use of lottery examples in the statistical areas of probability and decision analysis are discussed. Second, two different systems for predicting lottery numbers are examined, along with a discussion of the statistical concepts that are being inappropriately utilized in each case. An analysis of these misuses of statistics can be an interesting vehicle for explaining statistical ideas to students in introductory classes.

摘要:
There have been many studies on the detection of outliers. In one of the very early articles it was shown that the deviation of any particular observation from the mean is bounded by a multiple of the standard deviation. This result is simple and has resulted in periodic rediscoveries, coupled with a variety of alternative proofs. We provide a historical review of these various methods, and then pose yet another proof that may have some intrinsic interest.

摘要:
The invariance of maximum likelihood estimators to non-one-to-one parameter transformations is considered. Three approaches to maximum likelihood estimation are discussed, and it is shown that invariance depends on the approach adopted. A theorem is provided that gives sufficient conditions for invariance to hold under all three approaches.

摘要:
This note presents a method of finding the power of a two-sample rank test under the Lehmann alternatives. The method considers expressing a rank statistic in terms of the empirical distribution functions of the samples and uses properties of order statistics. The author finds that the students in an introductory course on nonparametric statistics feel more comfortable with this than with the elegant approach presented by Lehmann.
