摘要:
Statisticians and others who teach statistics at liberal arts colleges enjoy opportunities and encounter difficulties that are unique to the liberal arts setting. In July 1987 a small group of statisticians participated in a workshop at which discussion focused on three major issues: statistics in the liberal arts, the teaching of statistics, and the role of a statistician at a liberal arts college. By summarizing our discussion in this report we hope to provide support for statisticians at liberal arts colleges and to initiate discussion directed toward giving statistics education a prominent position in the liberal arts curriculum.

摘要:
Statistical instruction for graduate service courses in an off-campus environment is typified by three-hour evening classes of full-time employed students, who have high motivations to learn but diverse backgrounds and little time. Although the goals in teaching are no different from those in the usual campus setting, there are differences in projects and computer work, in textbook selection and use, in exams, and in content delivery. The key elements to efficient communication in this off-campus environment are organization and flexibility in incorporating diverse tools and strategies.

摘要:
Simple between-group comparisons of category representation percentages can be misleading for investigation of differential group selection procedures—the presence of a strong selection factor can obscure the effects of intermediate factors. This paradoxical effect is easily resolved through elementary application of the Bayes theorem. Because category representation percentages are often convenient and intuitively appealing to the statistically naive, however, there exist diverse and pervasive opportunities for incorrect interpretation with fallacious conclusions. Toxic shock syndrome epidemiological data are used to illustrate the paradox.

摘要:
An important part of exploratory data analysis is to determine if the data at hand reasonably satisfy the assumptions underlying the statistical test to be performed. Parametric tests include assumptions about the distribution of the data, which are explored using goodness-of-fit tests. One of the easiest goodness-of-fit tests to use is the “correlation coefficient test.” This test requires special tables that are currently readily available only for testing for fit to the Normal distribution. This article presents tables for the Type 1 (Gumbel) extreme-value distribution.
