摘要:
This article provides a justification of the ban against sub-sampling the output of a stationary Markov chain that is suitable for presentation in undergraduate and beginning graduate-level courses. The justification does not rely on reversibility of the chain as does Geyer's (1992) argument and so applies to the usual implementation of the Gibbs sampler.

摘要:
This article is based on the report of the Subcommittee on Electronic Publications of the Committee on Publications of the American Statistical Association. It reports on existing instances of electronic publications, speculates on the future of electronic publications in statistics, discusses some steps that can be taken to ensure that electronic publications will optimally serve the statistics profession, and makes some recommendations for immediate action.

摘要:
This article critically contrasts two schools of thought on quality management: Japanese total quality control and Deming's theory of management. An overview of each school of thought is presented in respect to definition of quality, purpose, structure, and intrinsic value. The differences between the two schools of thought are discussed in respect to five issues: purpose and structure, role of competition as a motivational tool to achieve customer satisfaction, use of fear as a managerial tool, use of numeric targets as tools of management, and use of performance appraisal as a tool of management.

摘要:
In many regression studies, there is an ambition to compare the relative importance of different variables. One measure frequently used is standardized regression coefficients. The present article reveals an inconsistency in the definition of the standardized coefficients and demonstrates that if they were correctly defined, a comparison between standardized coefficients would be similar to comparingtvalues.

摘要:
LetX1andX2be independent random variables with the same distribution functionFv, with the parameter v being unknown. A prediction interval forX2, given an observation ofX1, is constructed on the basis of the acceptance region of the two-sample problem with the hypothesisH0that the parameters v1and v2of the distributions ofX1andX2are the same against the one- or two-sided alternative. Although this simple idea can be found in the statistical literature, it deserves more attention in statistical textbooks. Applications are given to the Poisson and the binomial distribution. Besides the description of different procedures to compute exact prediction limits in the Poisson and binomial case, approximation formulas are given with an error term o(1) with corresponding reliable bounds for the approximation error, that seem to be new.

摘要:
Two rank-based methods for analyzing linear models are compared. A robust general linear model (RGLM); similar to least squares, offers a complete analysis of a model, including estimation, testing, and diagnostic checks. It is supported by asymptotic theory and is highly efficient. The other is the rank transform (RT), which offers a testing procedure. Unlike RGLM, the RT is not supported by a general theory, and although initial simulation studies appeared promising, recent theoretical and Monte Carlo studies question the wisdom of doing RT's on designs as simple as two-way models. The two analyses are contrasted over factorial designs on which they can substantially differ. These differences are highlighted in a simulation study on a three-way factorial design. We conclude the contrast with an analysis of covariance example.

摘要:
In interpreting the binary regression models often used in the analysis of dose-response data, it is common to introduce the idea of an underlying continuous tolerance distribution. Different choices of link function lead to different tolerance distributions. A useful way of comparing these alternatives is to compare the hazard functions or tail functions associated with each tolerance distribution. Tail functions can also be applied to give numerically preferable formulas for the iterative weights and the adjusted dependent variable in the fitting of binary regression models by the iteratively reweighted least-squares algorithm.
