摘要:
The change from the z of “Student's” 1908 paper to thetof present day statistical theory and practice is traced and documented. It is shown that the change was brought about by the extension of “Student's” approach, by R.A. Fisher, to a broader class of problems, in response to a direct appeal from “Student” for a solution to one of these problems.

摘要:
Polynomial regression of degreepin one independent variable χ is considered. Numerically large sample correlations between χαand χβ, α < β, a, β = 1, ···,p, may cause ill-conditioning in the matrix to be inverted in application of the method of least squares. These sample correlations are investigated. It is confirmed that centering of the independent variable to have zero sample mean removes nonessential ill-conditioning. If the sample values of χ are placed symmetrically about their mean, the sample correlation between χαand χβis reduced to zero by centering when α + β is odd, but may remain large when α + β is even. Some examples and recommendations are given.

摘要:
The analysis of a generalk-factor factorial experiment having unequal numbers of observations per cell is complex. For the special case of a 2kexperiment with unequal numbers of observations per cell, the method of unweighted means provides a simple vehicle for analysis that requires no matrix inversion and can be used with existing software programs for the analysis of balanced data. All numerator sums of squares for testing main effects and interactions are χ2with one degree of freedom. In addition, for tests having one degree of freedom in any factorial experiment, the method of unweighted means may be modified to yield exact tests.

摘要:
The results of a simple counting experiment are presented and analyzed. A model is set up that includes bias and intra-enumerator correlation; these components are estimated and their effect projected for a more general sampling situation. This provides a realistic data set to give greater insight into the nature and prevalence of measurement error. In this example the measurement bias is about four percent, with a .13 intra-enumerator correlation. This experiment is suitable for a classroom exercise for introductory statistical methods or for more advanced statistics students.

摘要:
A procedure is given for finding independent, jointly sufficient statistics for parameters, when sufficient statistics exist, and for finding the distribution of one of the statistics. It involves finding the joint conditional pdf of all but one sample observation, given the value of one of the original jointly sufficient statistics.

摘要:
A second course in statistics, for nonstatisticians who will use packaged statistical software in their work, is outlined. The course is directed toward the wise choice, use, and evaluation of statistical computer packages. The goal of the course is to train educated consumers of statistical programs. Particular attention is paid to computer-based data analysis, interpretation of output, comparison of competing packages, and statistical problems that arise when computers are employed to analyze large data sets.
