摘要:
AbstractSupported employment represents an important alternative to traditional forms of day service in Britain. Social integration in the workplace has been seen as one of its primary aims and this has been a key outcome measure in research. Few studies have looked at engagement in meaningful activity as an outcome measure. This paper describes a direct observation study which compared patterns of interaction and engagement for eight people with learning disabilities being supported in ordinary work settings and eight non‐disabled co‐workers. The results for engagement were favourable, showing no significant difference in percentage of time engaged for the two groups, although supported workers spent more time in on‐task activities than their colleagues. There was no significant difference in frequency of interaction, and who people talked with, between the groups, except where Job Coaches were present, where they became the main focus of interaction for supported workers. Content of interaction differed, co‐workers being more frequently involved in directing others and teasing and joking, while supported workers received praise and greetings more frequently. Reasons for the observed differences and implications for supported employment services are di

摘要:
AbstractThis study investigated the relationship between behaviour and adaptive functioning in 70 children of 5–16 years of age with special needs from three ethnic groups who lived in an urban health district. Parents were interviewed and completed the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale (VABS) and the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist (ABC). The most pronounced developmental deficits were found in communication and daily living skills. Two‐thirds of the subjects were rated as having a moderately severe behaviour problem on at least one item of the ABC. Asian children presented slightly more difficulties in communication, and Afro‐Caribbean children did better than the other children on all domains (though this was not statistically significant). In addition, European children were rated significantly higher than the other two groups in the behavioural scales of hyperactivity and inappropriate speech. Within the whole sample, domains of adaptive functioning, particularly socialisation, were negatively correlated with behavioural problems. Inappropriate speech, as rated by the ABC, was associated with developmental delay on all three VABS do

摘要:
AbstractIn some occupations, there is an increased risk of becoming a victim of a violent incident. Nursing and care work, in settings for people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, or who have mental health needs, are occupations which can involve such a risk. This study examined how staff felt, after a violent incident, towards the perpetrator of die incident (expressed emotion), and the reasons (attributions) that the care staff gave as to their belief about the cause of the incident. Coping was investigated by looking at measures of anxiety. Results indicated that anxiety was often increased a week after the incident but then returned to baseline levels after a month. Expressed emotion was often high after an incident, and remained high a month later. Reasons that staff gave about the cause of the violent incident varied but they seldom blamed themselves for die incident. They tended to make attributions which were internal to the client, external to themselves, personal to the client, uncontrollable by themselves, and neither controllable nor uncontrollable by the client.

摘要:
AbstractPsychotropic prescribing was surveyed over an 18‐year period in an intellectual disability hospital between 1972 and 1990. The number of inpatients fell from 605 to 242 but the proportion receiving psychotropic drugs rose from 33% to 47% widi an increase in die percentage of the population receiving neuroleptics and lidiium. Polypharmacy applied to 29% of the patients receiving psychotropic drugs in 1990. The changes in prescribing may be partly related to the increased proportion of individuals with more severe psychiatric symptomatology in the populatio

摘要:
AbstractThe Quality of Life of people with learning disabilities has become a topic of much concern to academics, policy makers, human service providers and evaluators. As yet there has been little progress towards the goal of developing an instrument which adequately reflects the subjective QOL perceptions of people with learning disabilities. To assist in die development of a psychometrically sound and internationally acceptable QOL measure, factor analyses of the Schalock&Keith (1993)Quality of Life Questionnaire (QOL. Q). were undertaken widi a British sample. Discrepancies between the factor solution reported in theQOL. Q Standardisation Manual(Schalock, Keith&Hoffman, 1990) and that obtained for the UK sample are reported. It is concluded that theQOL. Qshows broad cross‐cultural comparabilit

摘要:
AbstractThe present study evaluated inter‐informant agreement on the Motivation Assessment Scale across 42 topographies of challenging behaviour in five children with severe intellectual disabilities. The results revealed unacceptably low levels of inter‐rater reliability on all sub‐scales of the MAS and unacceptably low levels of inter‐informant agreement on the purported behavioural function of the rated challenging beh
