ABSTRACT.A positive relationship is shown between the frequency of successful completions of courtship and the extent of development of the ‘calling’ posture ofE. cautellafemales. Further relationships are shown between the frequency of successful completions of courtship and the positions in which calling females hold their antennae. During late photophase, calling females which hold their antennae forward are less likely to mate than are similarly calling females which hold their antennae back over the wings, whereas in early scotophase this relationship is reversed, and calling females which hold their antennae forward are more likely to mate than are similarly calling females which hold their antennae back. These observations are discussed in relation to the diel rhythm of the species, disturbance, and female receptivity to male courts

ABSTRACT.The changes in behaviour of nymphs ofLocusta migratoriain relation to free water, during the course of two different deprivation regimes are described. With no access to food or water for 24 h at 30°C, the insects responded positively to free water when it was provided. If dry food was provided during water deprivation, positive responses occurred in 8 h. The physiological changes associated with the behavioural change indicate that positive responses were correlated with a reduction in abdominal volume; experimentally induced changes confirmed this. Increased osmotic pressure did not influence the onset of drinking, but the amount of water ingested was directly correlated with the size of osmotic pressure increases

ABSTRACT.The fine structure and the behavioural threshold for vibration sensitivity of the eight thoracic filiform hairs ofBarathra brassicaecaterpillars were investigated through an intermoult/moult cycle. Associated with each filiform hair is one bipolar sensory cell and three enveloping cells. The outer dendritic segment terminates in an ecdysial canal in the hair base and a tubular body lies at its distal end. Shortly before apolysis the dendrite elongates. By this means the connection between the sensory cell and the old cuticular apparatus is maintained while the epithelium and the old thoracic cuticle are separating. The new cuticular apparatus of the filiform hair is formed in the second half of the larval stage by the three enveloping cells. A second tubular body in the elongated outer dendritic segment is formed at the base of the replacement hair 10 h before next ecdysis, so that the new hair functions as soon as ecdysis is completed, the old cuticular apparatus with the old tubular bodies being torn away with the exuvia during ecdysis. Sensitivity to a 300 Hz tone was tested in the standing wave of a Kundt's tube. Throughout most of the larval instar the threshold was 2.0 ± 0.3 μm particle displacement amplitude until 1–2h before ecdysis when it rose to 6.8 ± 1.3 μm and at 10–30 min before the beginning of ecdysis no reaction to sound could be detected. Once the old cuticle was shed maximum sensitivity returned as soon as the replacement hairs were erect. ABSTRACT.Newly‐emerged, unfedDendroctonus brevicomisfemales produced large quantities of the pheromoneexo‐brevicomin when treated topically with the synthetic juvenile hormone 10,11‐epoxyfarnesenic acid methyl ester (JH III). No exogenous source of pheromone precursor was required, and decapitation experiments showed that the synthetic JH was effective in the apparent absence of brain hormone. However, implantations of combined corpora allata—corpora cardiaca from either newly‐emerged or fed (i.e. pheromone producing) females failed to stimulateexo‐brevicomin synthesis by recipient unfed beetles. Biosynthesis ofexo‐brevicomin was induced in newly‐emerged females by ingestion of host phloem, and the stimulatory phloem component was found in methanol extracts. ABSTRACT.Removal of the antennae fromSchistocerca gregariaearly in the third or fourth instar resulted in fifth instar nymphs with a green haemolymph and cuticle. Antennectomized adults had a lower somatic dry weight and a smaller fat body than operated control insects. In addition, their rate of sexual development increased and some of their morphometric parameters were altered. Implantation of corpora allata into fourth instar nymphs induced a green coloration of the haemolymph after a few days. It is suggested that antennectomy ofSchistocercanymphs resulted in an increased effectiveness of the corpus allatum hormone with its concomitant effects on nymphal pigmentation, growth and development, and adult morphometries. It is further suggested that antennectomy of crowded locusts may mimic, for them, the uncrowded condition, by reducing sensory input.
