摘要:
The evolution of the history museum, since it first made its appearance in Europe in the shape of a portrait cabinet or battle gallery, has been a slow process. Many different forms have developed over the years. One of the newest—and also the most committed—conceptions of a museum of history is presented by the Curator of the Musée de Bretagne at Rennes. The arguments put forward by Jean‐Yves Veil lard are daring ones and to some readers his conclusions on the ultimate purpose of a history museum will seem provocative, coming from this trained historian, a professional museum man. We felt that it was salutary for a young expert to give free expression to his convictions, stemming from an experiment in which he has taken part and reflecting his confidence in what the history museum has to offer to man today. There may be different ideas on this subject which the editors of Museum believe they should make known as widely as possible. Taking the article by Jean‐Yves Veillard as the basis of their inquiry, the editors have elicited the views of a number of other history museum experts. Their replies, for various reasons, have not been up to our expectations. But the discussion can go on if reactions to this article are forthcoming from the experts already consulted or from other historians, museum curators, or educators. The editors will be glad to publish such contributions in subsequent issues, (Editor

摘要:
The Niamey Museum is a unique and highly original institution, entirely financed—apart from the director's salary—from local resources. The open‐air museum includes a zoo and ethnographical and botanical sections and a sorcerer's tree (arbre à griots). Permanent and temporary pavilions house exhibitions which are either specialized or provide a synthesis of a given subject. A handicrafts centre sells what it produces. There are literacy classes and a cultural activities centre. It is the work of the President of the Republic of Niger, who was the creative influence behind its foundation and sees in it an instrument of national unity and popular education; of the President of the National Assembly (a historian and traditional scholar) who has guided its development; and of the local population which has paid for the museum, visits it and keeps it lively. Some European experts do not seem to understand the museum, but for the Africans it is the ideal place in which to learn, to admire and to marvel—over 300,000 visitors a year. Some of the guides may be technically illiterate but can explain the synthesis of cultures to visitors in vernacular languages. It is the last place in which urbanized citizens can find their roots again and learn about the diversity of their country. In short, the birth of a specifically African museology, working for its own people with its own resources in an institution run by a particularly understanding and inventive director. 摘要:
This article explains what is being done in Hungary to study and make people aware of the country's rich heritage of traditional popular architecture. What is more important is that the article describes three villages, which at the same time are (or will be) museums of this architecture: the museum village of Göcsej, already completed; the museum village of Vas, upon which work is now in process; Sósto museum which is still at the project stage. At each stage, the experience already gained is turned to advantage. This is a very large‐scale scheme which could well be imitated in other countries, (Editors' No

摘要:
The Museum of Natural History in Mexico was completed in less than a year, and opened in 1964. From every point of view—architecture, its programme, visual presentation or setting—it is exemplary of its kind. Its first concern naturally is Mexico but the treatment is such that its message is general and clearly understandable however theoretical some of the material dealt with. But perhaps the most striking feature of the museum is that, like a work of art, all of its parts are interdependent and form a logical whole.Another article on the museum, with a very different approach, by George E. Lindsay of the San Francisco Science Museum, appeared in the Journal of World History1(also published by Unesco). (Editors' No
