摘要:
The following report concerns the technical organization of the International Art Exhibition held last year from 28 April to 29 October at Expo 67 in Montreal, and includes a detailed description of the design and functions of the specially constructed museum building. While this exhibition was perhaps the most elaborate yet held at a world fair, the author and his colleagues acquired useful facts and experiences which should be of interest to those members of the museum profession responsible for the organization of international travelling art exhibitions. To some extent there are object lessons to be learnt by smaller institutions operating on more limited budgets. The exhibition was, as is generally acknowledged, a great success, attended by 1,529,392 persons, with an average daily attendance of 8,500.The organization of such an exhibition, which had its beginnings in 1964, involved, of necessity, numerous individuals and specialists both in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, and the Canadian Corporation for the World Exhibition (known otherwise as Expo 67), together with the eminent personalities who formed the International Fine Arts Advisory Committee, and also required the co‐operation of architects and engineers. Buchanan, Secretary of the International Fine Arts Advisory Committee, who from the very first planning meetings emphasised the importance of adequate technical standards in respect of the preservation, handling, transportation, and housing of the exhibition; Miss Jean Sutherland Boggs, Director of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, who, through the Board of Trustees, authorised the seconding of the necessary staff to administer and operate the exhibition and museum in Montreal; members of my staff in the National Conservation Research Laboratory of the National Gallery of Canada—Messrs. M. Ruggles, U. Dix, J. Halmy (resident conservator at Expo 67), J. MacG. Grant and Miss Y. B. Gravelle; Mr. D. DeCoste, and members of his handling and packing staff; and Mr. E. Kerr, and members of his photographic unit. Acknowledgement is also due to the resident executive staff of the exhibition, Miss Kathleen Fenwick being director, and Mr. Gyde V. Shepherd; deputy director, who kept the exhibition running smoothly under very challenging conditions. My own official function throughout was as director of conservation and technical consultant to the International Fine Arts Advisory Committee. This involved frequent travel between Ottawa and Mon
