摘要:
Carefully conducted ultrasound and spiral computed tomography accurately characterize the majority of small incidentally detected renal masses. Masses greater than 2.0 cm that are solid or indeterminate should be excized. Masses less than 1.5 cm that cannot be characterized as benign should be followed up with computed tomography. Spiral unenhanced computed tomography is a promising new method for diagnosing ureteric colic. The renal parenchymal changes shown by ultrasound and computed tomography in acute infection should be described by the unifying term 'acute pyelonephritis'.

摘要:
Nuclear medicine continues to have a major nephro-urological interest. Current areas of progress and interest include: simplified methods of assessing renal function, where there seems to be hope of agreement that single-sample measurements of glomerular filtration rate will be accepted; renovascular disease, where the evidence is now mounting that the captopril stress renogram has a major part to play in patient assessment; obstruction, where the introduction of the F- 15 study represents a major advance; the use of dimercaptosuccinic acid studies in assessment of renal scarring; and nuclear medicine in carcinoma of the prostate.

摘要:
lodinated X-ray contrast agents and gadolinium chelate magnetic resonance imaging contrast enhancing agents, have the same pharmacokinetics as99mTc or51Cr labelled ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and inulin. They are all excreted unchanged by passive glomerular filtration in the kidney. They may, therefore, be used to obtain measures of renal function as an adjunct to any imaging study involving contrast enhancement. The theory of this, and some applications, are outlined, and a warning is given concerning the possible effect on renal function of the agents themselves.

摘要:
The Nutcracker syndrome is an infrequently recognized cause of pain and haematuria that is diagnosed by selective venography and left renal vein and inferior vena cava pullback pressure measurements. The diagnosis may be suspected, however, on cross-sectional imaging with ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging particularly when a left renal source of haemorrhage has been visualized at cystoscopy. Once diagnosed, definitive surgical treatment of the syndrome is almost always effective in alleviating symptoms.

摘要:
The difficulties in the diagnosis and the subsequent poor results of surgery in the management of patients with veno-occlusive dysfunction are well documented. It has been suggested that the primary pathology is a defect in cavernosal smooth muscle relaxation with the veno-occlusive dysfunction being a secondary phenomenon. Should the investigation and surgical management of veno-occlusive dysfunction continue?.

摘要:
Cryosurgery of the prostate has recently undergone a resurgence owing to precise guidance of the freezing process by transrectal ultrasound. Clinical studies have demonstrated a high local ablation rate and few serious complications. Animal experiments have demonstrated the potential for complete glandular ablation. Longer term studies are needed, particularly randomized trials comparing various treatment options. Future laboratory studies are encouraged as a means to standardize various procedural variations that are in clinical practice.
