摘要:
AbstractInfant and child homicide rates have remained stable over the last 20 years. They represent the most visible part of the spectrum of fatal child abuse. By contrast, infant mortality and child deaths from accidents and SIDS have all declined. The prevention strategies used to combat these deaths would appear to have been more successful than the protection strategies used against child abuse deaths. International comparisons of infant homicide rates have shown that measures of family stress, available resources and the cultural variables of low status of women and the culture of violence were all associated with increased infant homicide rates. The paper argues for a change in our culture towards children to prevent fatal child abuse. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley&Sons, Ltd

摘要:
AbstractResults of detailed inquiry into 37 unexpected deaths in infancy in Leeds over 18 months in 1991/2 revealed issues of abuse or neglect in 27, in 10 of which it was the major concern. Important findings included non‐organic failure to thrive, injury, or history suggesting suffocation. A history of abuse and neglect in parents as children, prior involvement with social services, poverty and social deprivation, the family struggling to cope and abuse or neglect of siblings were also identified. Deaths from child abuse and neglect are frequently not recognized in official reporting systems and it is likely that there are deaths registered as SIDS which are the result of maltreatment. Recognition depends on creating a jigsaw picture of all the circumstances surrounding the infant and family. Failure to recognize a death from maltreatment may leave other children at risk. 摘要:
AbstractThis article describes the process of planning and running a training course for multi‐disciplinary professionals in the wake of a local child death inquiry. The factors which influenced the content and management of the training experience are discussed, in particular the trainers' determination to encourage course participants to develop practice foresight rather than defensive reactions to what had emerged in the inquiry's findings. How the course was received by the practitioners, the work that was accomplished and the impact on the trainers of running a course in such circumstances are then highlighted. 摘要:
AbstractThe role of the media in influencing child protection policy is explored by examination of the death of one child, Daniel Valerio, in Victoria, Australia. Daniel, 2 years old, died at the hands of his mother's de facto barely five months after he (Paul Aiton) moved in with Daniel's mother, Cheryl Butcher.[The Australian term ‘de facto’ is the equivalent of the English word ‘cohabitee’.] A series of reports to protective services highlighting multiple and severe bruising to Daniel were made; Daniel's postmortem revealed 104 bruises on his body. Although 21 professionals were involved in the case, tragedy was not averted; in fact, it was an electrician rather than trained professionals who recognized the obvious abuse. A series of inquiries into the case ensued; these were not immediately reported by the media, but press attention to the case intensified gradually. This led to a successful though paradoxical campaign by one newspaper, the MelbourneHerald Sun, to introduce the mandatory reporting of child abuse by health and welfare professionals. The paradox is that those people who needed to know of the case to protect Daniel knew about it before his death. This article analyses the campaign, highlights the factors which led to its success and provides succinct advice to professionals on the use of the media. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley&S
