This study provides evidence of a moderate relationship between the self-rated activation and euphoria responses to the acute administration of d-amphetamine and the antidepressant responses to lithium carbonate in a 3-week clinical trial in female unipolar depressed patients. Responses to d-amphetamine and lithium were not correlated in male patients or in bipolar patients. This preliminary finding needs to be replicated before further conclusions can be drawn.

Mental performance was studied in 6 hypothyrotic patients before, seven weeks after and one year after initiation of thyroxine substitution therapy. Performance as measured by critical flicker-fusion (CFF) and vernier visual acuity (KVAT) improved significantly after 7 weeks of substitution therapy, and improved still further, although not significantly, after 1 year. Performance as measured by two reaction time tasks was not significantly improved, either after 7 weeks or after 1 year. The results were interpreted in terms of the complexity of the measures used, more complex measures being more affected by the disease through summing of several ‘unit impairments’. Further, 3 subjects were studied in detail with repeated measurements of CFF. 1 subject was studied with T4 substitution, another with T3 substitution and 1 subject with T4 substitution and T4 substitution plus T4 propylthiouracil blocking of T4 to T3 metabolism. With T4 substitution there was a distinct increase in performance, with a delay of 2-3 weeks after a dose change. Interest in biogenic amine function in affective disorders has stimulated a variety of research strategies including the measurement of hormonal response to a variety of stimuli as an indirect method of investigating the integrity of aminergic function in clinically depressed patients. Apomorphine and levodopa are known to stimulate growth hormone release via a dopaminergic pathway in median eminence. Administration of these agents to groups of depressed patients and age, sex-matched normal control subjects did not indicate any significant abnormality in this dopaminergic system.

HLA antigens were studied in 50 patients, 40 males, 10 females and two brothers of patients, all suffering from schizophrenic syndromes. The average duration of illness for the whole group was 18 ± 1.5 years. The frequency of A10 antigen was increased in the schizophrenic patients as compared with 449 healthy individuals. None of the findings concerning HLA and schizophrenia reported in the literature could be verified in the present study. The two ill brothers comprised in the study proved to have the same HLA phenotype as their respective ill sibling. The present study deals with the effects of long-lasting heroin addiction on the basal levels of prolactin and its response to stimulation with TRH (500 µg i.v.) or sulpiride (100 mg i.m.). Assays were done in 17 male heroin addicts, aged 18–40 years, with a history of addiction of heroin only lasting from 8 months to 4 years and a daily intravenous intake between 200 and 2,500 mg. The presence of heroin in the urine was demonstrated. The results obtained show basal hyperprolactinemia in 7 patients, with a blunted response to either TRH or sulpiride stimulation in 4 of these.
